Pearl Cherniak

Obituary of Pearl Cherniak

PEARL CHERNIAK (nee Kowalchuk) Suddenly but peacefully, on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 with her family by her side at Concordia Hospital, Pearl Cherniak left us to take her place in heaven, at the age of 76. She will be dearly missed by her loving husband of 55 years, Anton (Tony); daughters Barb Davison (David Olivier), Donna Sutherland (Mike) and Judi Cherniak. She was loved so much by all of her grandchildren; Joel and Wade Davison; Alison, Melanie, Mark and Nicola Sutherland; Braden and Tanner Ewchuk. Pearl will also be missed by brothers Mike (Shirley); Donny (Heather); Harry (Sheila); and sisters Mary Kowalchuk; Jean (Nick) Shymko; Adeline Chic; and sisters-in-law Pauline Kowalchuk, Diane Swedlo (Arnold), Gloria Kowalchuk, Rose Marsh (Ray), and all of their families. Pearl was predeceased by her mother Anna; father Nicholas; brothers Joe Baron, John and Bill Kowalchuk; sisters Ann Fill; Sophie Shymko; Pauline Stefishen; Rose Pidruchny; and by her cherished grandson, Todd Davison. Pearl was born on September 25, 1934 into a large family in Zbruch, Manitoba, and attended school there. She moved to Winnipeg and worked at Paulins Biscuits for many years. Pearl married Tony in 1955, and once the girls were born, she was a busy stay-at-home mom. She enjoyed volunteering at the school, the hospital and nursing homes. She loved sharing her time and talents and always had time for a story (or three). Mom loved baking in massive quantities, and was thrilled when we all enjoyed her holopchi and perogies. She always made sure there was enough food for each family to take some home. We are grateful that Ma was again able to prepare her traditional Christmas Eve meal for her family this year. Family and faith were very important to her. Pearl loved talking on the phone, spending summers at the cottage at Winnipeg Beach, and had fond memories of her travels across Canada and The States. She enjoyed the company of her many furry friends. Playing cards was one of her favourite pastimes, as it was often an excuse to spend time with loved ones. Pearl was a member of Holy Eucharist Parish, and enjoyed her time in the Women's League. Treasured memories were made as Mom and Dad celebrated their 50th anniversary with all their family. Pearl was a wonderful person, wife, mother and grandmother. She always saw the good in everyone and the beauty in everything. Stopping to smell the roses was important to her. We know she loved us all, and we are blessed to have had her in our lives. She will be desperately missed. Mom was a 'people person'. She and Dad recently moved to Concordia Village where she continued to enjoy meeting new people, and making new friends. Family and friends are invited to join us in celebrating her life. Prayers will be on Monday, January 3, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. Divine Liturgy on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 10:00 a.m., both at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church (Watt St. and Munroe Ave). Interment will follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. Rev. Dr. Michael Kwiatkowski will preside. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the 'Believe in the Goal Foundation' 2500 Esselmont Ave. Winnipeg, R2C 5H6 'Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant' (Matthew 25:21) Vichnaya Pamyat!
