Obituary of Katherine KLUSS

KATHERINE KLUSS 1912 - 2008 Mom peacefully passed away at the Misericordia Health Centre on November 3, 2008. Kay was born on August 23, 1912 in Hamrlik, MB and married Mike Kluss (C.P.R. Section Foreman) in 1936. They lived in Domain, MB a short while, then in Osborne, MB. Mom moved to Winnipeg in 1945, with her two children. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Helen Eckstein and son Edward (Linda) of Kamloops, BC; her sister Anne Defir from Ontario; her five grandchildren, Tobie Mae (Ron) Sandquist, Brett Eckstein (Pennie), Hollie (Roy) Ogibowski, Carla Kluss (Gerry) and Marnie (Doug) McCarthy; 14 great-grandchildren, Sarah (Jessy), Lisa (Jamie), Ashley, Rebecca, Matthew, Keenan, Vanessa, Monica, Nicholas, Hennessy, Markus, Tyghe, Jerry Jr., and Madison; also her many nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her parents Mike and Maria Defir; brothers, John, Pete, Mike, Steve and Harry; sisters, Pauline Kochan and Evelyn Grewinski; also two sisters Mary and Ann, who passed away at a young age; her husband Mike Kluss; her partner of 31 years, Bill Antonick; a step-daughter, Elizabeth (Kluss) Morgan in 1979, and her son-in-law, Marvin Eckstein in 2007. Mom was a hard worker and a perfectionist. She did chores on the farm, looked after a big C.P.R. house and train station in Osborne, attended Red Cross meetings and knit during World War II for the soldiers. She traded ration coupons for sugar with the butter she churned from our faithful cow "Bessy:. Everything was done from scratch and Mom always came out looking like a Fashion Plate. Mom was an excellent seamstress, working for the garment industry until 1979. Mom belonged to the Ukrainian "Lesya" Senior Choir, performing in concerts, personal care homes and Folklorama for about 20 years. Mom enjoyed driving her car, getting her driver's license when she was 68. She loved to dance and took up ballroom dancing, winning two trophies. Her favorite thing was bingo and she played regularly. Mom did a lot of sewing at home for family and friends. Her sewing machine was always open and ready to fix a broken zipper or mend a pair of jeans for the children. Being a great cook, her peroghy were the best and a hit at our family dinners. A special time would be when the children would gather around their "Nanny" and she would sing and teach them songs in Ukrainian. We will miss and treasure those moments forever. The family wishes to thank the wonderful nurses and staff on the 6th floor at the Misericordia Health Centre. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, November 10 at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.
