Obituary of Joseph KOMUS

JOSEPH HENRY KOMUS Peacefully on January 6, 2009 at Calvary Place Personal Care Home, Joe Komus passed away at the age of 93. Predeceased by his beloved wife Jean (1995), son Bruce (2005), sister Anne, brothers Nick, Peter, and Bill, several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and by many from his extended group of friends. He is lovingly remembered by his brother Art (Gwen); and by his children David (Sandra), George, Marilyn Coupland (Ken), daughter-in-law Linda; grandchildren Mark, Matthew, Alastair, Vincent, Laura, Jolene, and Peter; sister-in-law Kay Robertson, and by numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was born January 3, 1916, the first Canadian-born child to immigrant parents, Joseph and Elizabeth. He maintained a close relationship with his siblings and their families throughout his life. He married Jean (nee Robertson) January 31, 1948 and they had four children. Joe lived a full and active life. He enjoyed a long and wonderful marriage with Jean. Family was important to both of them. He served with the Royal Canadian Engineers during the Second World War. His career with Manitoba Hydro spanned 30 years in the finance department including many years as Cash Receipts Supervisor. He retired in 1978. Among the many interests he enjoyed were square dancing, golfing, bowling, woodworking, curling, and rollerblading, which he took up at age 80. He was also involved in volunteer work, including adult literacy and serving on Thistle club executive. He was always ready to lend a helping hand. Joe and Jean enjoyed travelling. They spent many weekends and summer vacations with family and friends exploring campgrounds across the continent. Later voyages overseas included visits to Germany and Scotland. Joe was instrumental in re-establishing communication with extended family in Germany. His faith was important to him. He was a member of St Edwards Parish for over 50 years, serving as usher for many of those years. Although it is with sorrow that we say goodbye to a fine and loving father, it gives us joy to know that his long fight with Alzheimer disease is now over. Words can hardly express the family's deep gratitude to the staff at both Calvary Place and Lions Supportive Housing for the years of excellent care. The loving kindness to both dad and family made the final hours easier to bear. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday January 10 at 1:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 4588 Roblin Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Manitoba (10-120 Donald Street, R3C 4G2), Calvary Place Personal Care Home (1325 Erin Street, R3E 3R6) or charity of your choice.
