Obituary of Mary Korba

MARY KORBA It is with great sadness and loss that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother at St. Boniface Hospital on September 20, 2009. She was predeceased by her parents Nicholas and Anna Roshko, her brothers John and Michael Roshko and her husband John Korba. Mary was born in Winnipeg on February 17, 1914. At an early age the family moved to East Selkirk, where she attended Happy Thought School. Mary began her married life with John Korba in Selkirk and later moved to Winnipeg. Mary was the catalyst that bound her family together and she enveloped them with love. Although she worked for a short period of time as a nurse's aide and a dental assistant and later managed some real estate, her priority always remained her family. She always tried to make sure her family was provided for both spiritually and physically and she succeeded. Faith was always very important to Mary and she believed in the power of prayer. In Selkirk she was an active member of the Holy Eucharist Church and in Winnipeg in 1966 she became a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. She was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League and later the senior's group. Plants flourished under Mary's care and she enjoyed transplanting and growing her prize primulas and hot pink geraniums. She was a very good cook and baker and very hospitable. Later in life she was able to travel and her favorite trips were to the Ukraine, the birthplace of her parents, and to the Holyland, the birthplace of Christianity. Mary was blessed with relatively good health and remained active for much of her life. As she grew older osteoarthritis began to slow her down and in 2003 she had a severe stroke. We, the family, were blessed to have her for six more years so we could learn more about care, compassion, acceptance and love. Left to mourn her passing are, her son Terry (Pat), her daughter Holly, her beloved grandson John, nephews Roy and Randy, niece Ann and their families and friends who were more like extended family. Special thanks to Father Mark Gnutel and to some very special staff at Riverview Health Centre. Prayers (Parastas) will be said on Thursday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1001 Grant Avenue. Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, September 25 at 10:00 a.m. also at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church. Interment will be in East Selkirk.
