Obituary of Alice LUTZ

ALICE ELIZABETH LUTZ (nee Podborochynski) On Sunday, August 15, 2010 Alice passed away peacefully in Victoria Hospital with her family at her side. Alice will be sadly missed by her husband of 62 years, Andrew; sons Bob (Barb) Lutz of Sarnia, Ontario; Doug (Mallory) Lutz of Ra'anana, Israel; grandchildren Christopher (Tatyana) Lutz; Catherine (Mark) Chabot; Sarah and Noah Lutz; great-grandchildren Mika and Ryan and sisters-in-law Margaret Moroz and Janice Lutz of Winnipeg and many nieces and nephews. Alice was predeceased by her father Frank (1971), mother Sophie (1997) and her sister Joan (2008). Alice was born December 6, 1925 in Winnipeg. After graduating high school she completed a program in legal stenography and was employed for several years with a Winnipeg-based legal firm. Alice met her husband Andy in 1946 at a Ukrainian Cultural festival in Edmonton where she was playing in a Ukrainian youth orchestra and Andy was playing in marching band. From this first meeting, their relationship blossomed and they were married on September 4, 1948. After Andy graduated from university in 1949, they moved to Regina, Saskatchewan where Andy had a job with the Provincial Public Health Department. Their first son, Bob, was born in 1950 followed by the birth of their second son, Doug in 1955. Alice and Andy enjoyed a beautiful and full life in Regina with their family and made regular visits throughout the 20 years to Winnipeg to visit their extended families. Alice expanded her career as a mother and homemaker to include working as an office professional for Western Mack Trucks from 1964 to the end of 1970. During this work experience, she was exposed to many varied and colourful languages. Late in 1970, Alice, Andy and Doug returned to live in Winnipeg while Bob stayed in Saskatoon at university. Alice and Andy travelled extensively, enjoying various historical and natural sites while experiencing different cultures in several countries. In keeping with the great pride that Alice took in her sons' accomplishments, they travelled to London, England where Bob studied for his Master's degree, and to Cambridge, MA and Charlottesville, VA where Doug continued his post-doctoral education. Their travels also took them to Hawaii, various locations throughout the US, Cuba, the Eastern Caribbean and Western & Eastern Canada. More recently, she was thrilled to be able to visit her two new great-grandsons in Eastern Canada with Andy. Alice had a deep love of music, playing both violin and mandolin and participated in youth orchestras and ensembles throughout her youth. She developed an early deep passion for opera and dreamed of one day seeing a live performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York ... a dream which came true when she and Andy took in a performance of La Boheme at the Met in 2006. This passion for music was a loving gift Mom passed on to her sons and their families. One of Mom's other passions was gardening and she had a tremendous talent growing a wide variety of flowers, in particular, roses. The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to Dr. Pintin and the other staff and volunteers at Victoria General Hospital ICU and second floor post-operative unit for their wonderful professionalism and compassion in providing for Mom's care with comfort and dignity. In keeping with Mom's wishes there will be no funeral service. After cremation there will be a private family memorial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alice's memory to the Victoria General Hospital Foundation or to a charity of your choice.
