Sophie OLEKSUK

Obituary of Sophie OLEKSUK

Sophie Oleksuk (nee Poseluzney) February 19, 1918 - April 2, 2010 After a long and brave fight with Alzheimer, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, our matriarch, and the last survivor of her generation within our family. With her passing, we will miss her qualities of respectfulness, honesty, propriety, and generosity of heart, which was instrumental in shaping the lives of her children and grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband Peter, brother Lawrence, sisters Jean, Stella, Marie, Alice and a twin brother who died in infancy, and grandchild Wesley. She will be sorrowfully missed by her children Janice Marcinyk (Sadley), Calvin (Darlene, and Donald, grandchildren Ainley, Cindy, Kristen and Stacey and 8 great grandchildren. There is also a long list of nieces, nephews, their children and all the spouses who were as accepted by her as her own family and who cherished her in return. Sophie grew up in Cooks Creek and left after school for work in Toronto. On return she married Peter and moved to Fannystelle, built a house and farmed on what is now Oleksuk Road. She raised her children in a second home in St James, and welcomed all to her cottage in Twins Beaches. Her greatest love was her family and she ensured a sense of family was instilled in all around her. She organized and hosted grand holiday gatherings, unforgettable family reunions, and the many special celebrations. Her loves included decorating her homes, and preparing gourmet meals for her family gatherings. As a life time member of the St James Art Club, she was recognized with several awards of which she was very proud. Her legacy of paintings is cherished in so many family homes and those who purchased her works. Sophie retired to a quiet senior's home in Selkirk. She will be remembered for her inability to see the bad in anything or anyone, her positive attitude towards everything life presented, and the sense of humor she used to put a positive spin on everything. The family would like to thank Dr. Lindenschmidt for his kind and sensitive care in our mother's last days. Funeral service will be held on Saturday April 10 at 1:00 pm at Cropo Funeral Chapel 1422 Main Street with the Very Reverend Richard Soo, S.J. officiating. A private interment will take place at Cooks Creek at a later date. Cropo Funeral Chapel 586-8044
