Obituary of Mary PUSHKAR

MARY PUSHKAR Mary Pushkar died peacefully in her sleep, early March 21st, 2010, at the age of 96. Mary was born in the village of Slobitka, near Ternopil, Ukraine on January 5, 1914. She came to Canada at the age of four months, as a pioneer child. At an early age, she and her family cleared and settled land in Skylake, Manitoba. After 17 years, she and her family moved to Chatfield, Manitoba. In 1935, she married William Pushkar in Winnipeg, where they raised two children, Paul and Dolores. In 1989, her beloved husband, William passed away. Three years later, she moved to Montreal, to live with her daughter, Dolores. Mary was talented, with many skills; in sewing, gardening and fixing things. Her beautiful mock orange bushes and flowers fragranced her neighborhood. She had a phenomenal memory, even co-writing a book entitled UKRAINIAN SONG RECOLLECTIONS with daughter-in-law, Halia. She traveled widely; with her husband to Ukraine, with her sister, Stella, to California, with daughter, Dolores, to many states and provinces and the Caribbean, with son, Paul, to Alaska, Hawaii, Churchill, Manitoba to see the polar bears, to high in the mountains in Montana, with many road trips across Canada and the U.S.A., with daughter-in-law, Halia, to Florida, California, Kentucky, etc. People, who met her on her travels, were always pleasantly surprised. Her health in recent years, required considerable devotion and care by daughter, Dolores and nurse, Terry Reade, who deserve a profusion of thanks. She will be missed by daughter, Dolores Pushkar of Montreal, her son and his wife, Paul and Halia Pushkar of Coos Bay, Oregon, her grand-daughter, Alice Gold of Toronto, her grand-daughter and her husband, Leslie Gold and Don Baker of Montreal and Italy, and her great-grand-daughter, Sierra Baker and ex-son-in-law Rennie Gold, a physician who visited her weekly. She will also be missed by her sisters; Frances Blahey of Chatfield, Manitoba and Anne Gulowaty of Winnipeg, her brother and his wife, Ken and Pauline Yaremus of Vancouver, B.C., her brother-in-law, Mike Pushkar of Winnipeg, and all their families, nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors in Montreal, Winnipeg, Dayton, Ohio and Coos Bay, Oregon, where Mary spent summers. She was pre-deceased by her parents; Demitro and Anastasia Yaremus of Chatfield, Manitoba and by her sisters; Tillie, Stella and Edith, her brothers, John and Bill, her sister-in-law, Nelda Pushkar, and brothers-in-law: Harry Blahey, Peter Gulowaty and Kirk Kibsey. "Panakhyda" services will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 1, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at All Saints Ukrainian Cemetery in Winnipeg, next to her husband. Officiating will be Rt. Rev. Mitrat Michael Buyachok and Cantor, Bohdan Boyar, who is Mary's nephew, from Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral. Pallbearers will be nephews: Bruce Blahey, Wayne Blahey, Glen Blahey, David Gulowaty, Ken Gulowaty, nephew-in-law, Alex Hasay, alternate, Don Baker, grandson-in-law.
