Obituary of James Renning
James Douglas Renning
With sadness we announce Jim's passing on the evening of Wednesday, January 12th at the Health Science Centre in Winnipeg. With Colleen at his side, Jim succumbed to complications resulting from a fall earlier in September. Jim leaves behind his family in Winnipeg, Colleen and their son Ryan, Colleen's mother Alice and sister, Bonnie Balsillie and family.
Also surviving Jim is his son Garnet of Victoria, his daughter Rhonda of Kelowna, BC his brothers, sister and their families, nieces, nephews, cousins and long time friends.
Jim was born December 8, 1943 to Kenneth Renning and Margaret (Peggy) Phillips, (both deceased) he was raised in Brantford, ON, the youngest of his siblings, brother's Ron of Guelph, ON, Mike of Vancouver Island and Judy of Brantford, ON.
Jim's career path varied, of significance, in Ontario, he worked with the OPP and Canada Post in Westbank, BC. For the past 20 years in Winnipeg, positions Jim held were with Pitblado & Hoskin, Red Carpet Vending, Bolton Air, Parkside Ford and most recently with Stevenson Management Services, working at 229 Wellington Cres.
Jim was a great cook and Sunday dinners were his specialty, Ryan was spoiled with an ongoing supply of freshly baked peanut butter-chocolate chip cookies. Jim had a talent for remembering numbers, following the interest rate and making predictions to us about the economy. He was quite a storyteller and his Ken Renningism's are often repeated by members of our family. When Jim wasn't scolding and scaring the neighbourhood kids, he was watching out for them and "Mr. Rennings" had a special bond with Matthew and Adam. Jim's favourite things to do were sitting on the front porch or in the back yard keeping an eye on things, watching sports or the history channel on TV, taking road trips with his family, shooting the breeze with neighbours in the lane, tending to the flowers in the garden and doting on his family. Jim loved and was extremely proud of his children and their accomplishments, he would often brag about all three of them to anyone that would listen.
The family wishes to thank everyone who had Jim's best interests at heart, we will not forget your kindness and support, the many calls and well wishes from family, friends, neighbours, co-workers and colleagues. Special thanks to staff at HSC, in SICU, Step-down and Units A3 and D3 who cared for and gave your TLC to Jim for the past 3 months.
Cremation has taken place, there will be no formal service and as wished by Jim, he will be laid to rest in Brookside Cemetery in the spring.
