Obituary of Frank ZEATON

FRANK RAYMOND ZEATON Peacefully on November 19, 2008, and surrounded by family, Dad passed into the Arms of the Lord after a lengthy illness. Dad was predeceased by his parents Peter and Anna, brothers Walter and Adam, sisters Pauline and Jean, and baby son Raymond. Left to mourn his passing are his beloved wife of 51 years Nellie, his sons Howard, Rod (Myrna) and Guy (Brenda), grandchildren Raymond, Joshua, Jonathon, Gregory, Justin and Kira, his brother Paul, sister-in-law Margaret and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends. Dad was born September 13, 1928 in Winnipeg, raised in the North End, and grew up in a proud Ukrainian family. Not long after finishing high school, he moved to the U.S. for a job with Motorola-Electrohome with the intent of becoming a U.S. citizen. His citizenship required a tour of duty with the U.S Army, which he served with the Allied Occupational Forces in Germany. Upon being honourably discharged with the rank of Sergeant, Dad returned state-side and then not long after, back home to Winnipeg. In 1957 he married the love of his life, Nellie. They settled in Garden City where they raised their three boys. Dad worked at L&S Electric which became Temro on Osborne. He moved onto Guertin Bros. Paints and from there, with an associate, opened Mar-Wyn Industries. Some years later Mar-Wyn closed its doors and Dad went to work for Versatile. But he soon decided that this was not the place for him and he went into the contractor business for himself. Doing what he enjoyed, he later retired from the home renovation business. Dad and his brother Paul belonged to Pine Ridge Golf Club for over 30 years. This afforded Dad the opportunity to introduce all three of his sons to golf where many great Sundays were spent. When Mom retired from Air Canada, they made several trips south and east to visit family, but Dad was always glad to get back home. As his two older sons married and started their families Dad began his favourite job - being Gigi. He relished the time he spent with family, and friends and discovered another passion - cooking, and he was great at it! Holidays, birthdays and other festive occasions were always celebrated with scrumptious meals, and Dad loved to prepare them. Everyone was welcome at the table, but with a hitch - listening to Dad talk about his very fond memories of growing up, the Depression era, and the years he served during the Occupation. More recently Dad enjoyed going to Bomber games until his health no longer allowed him to attend. And if you needed news or weather reports talk to Dad, he was ALWAYS watching CNN or the Environment Canada Channel. His family wishes to thank the many health care providers, both home-care and at Health Sciences Centre, Riverview Health Centre, Seven Oaks Day Hospital, Concordia Hospital and finally the Staff on Lodge 2 West at Deer Lodge Centre. Lastly, a very big thank-you to his family physician, Dr. Terry Babick. Panakhyda will be sung on Monday, November 24 at 7:00pm at Cropo Funeral Chapel (1442 Main St.). Funeral Service be held on Tuesday, November 25 at 10:00am at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave. Both services will be officiated by Fr. Frank Szadiak C.Ss.R. Honourary Pallbearers will be Paul Zeaton, Edward Abbott, Michael Kowpak and Nicholas Karpinec.
