I had the honour and privilege of knowing Shirley at different times in my life. First as Mrs Richards; the mom of one of my childhood best friends Lynn; then as a young mom when I returned back to work at Wellness Institute where Shirley was among the first members, and who always had kind words for me, but my favourite part full of the best memories, was when she walked through the doors to call River Ridge RR her home. I feel very fortunate that she shared so much of herself and her time with me. She so loved her family, the one she came from and the one she created. Pride filled every story she told about all of you. She’d hustle out of my office if she was expecting a call and there was a special skip in her step that signalled when a visitor was coming. She was often my touchstone and sounding board when I was planning programming, giving me constructive and encouraging feedback. Shirley was a true friend to many, she had a faith that comforted and renewed her and a giggle that was infectious! Her style was always classy and on point, from her hats to her pins, scarves and dresses, but when she went out, especially when she was honoured at an event by the Congress of Black Woman, there was a glow from within her that outshone the glitter on her dress. My parents were among the new and reconnected friendships she nurtured and I know it was cherished.
My life was richer for having her in it- thanks for sharing your mom!

Dear Cousins. Your mother, my first cousin Shirley is your loss in death, but Heaven’s gain.
Shirley was a model family member, as a daughter, sister, niece, aunt, cousin well before becoming a super mom and grand mom!
She was graceful and a lady in all she did and spoke. Shirley was greatly admired by her uncles and aunts. My dad her Uncle Charles (deceased) regularly spoke of Shirley in high esteem. Hearing him in his life time speaking so well of his niece Shirley as I grew up allowed me to know of her. Later in my early teens I had the honour of her asking my mother if I could babysit early evenings for her sleeping children while she attended various club meetings. I felt so grown up! She was so gentle to me and generously paid me!
Family, I know you realize that God has been generous to your mom in so many areas. She was blessed with a good, loving husband and a long and great marriage. Wonderful accomplishments in her career life. She also was blessed with children and grands’. Your mom knew God was blessing her life and she enjoyed His blessings.
The accomplishments of your mother she generously seeded into her children and the results show in your successes.
I know she went on her journey in peace with the love, care and attention each of you gave in various ways.
Your mom will always be admired, remembered, and loved by this entire remaining family and all who knew her.
I thank God for giving Shirley your mom to this family.
She is in her earned eternal home with our Heavenly Father and many, many family members who I know well received her.
“TO GOD BE THE GLORY FOR THE GOOD THINGS HE HAS DONE”
SUBMITTED IN LOVE. Your cousin, Maxine Husbands-Brown

Good evening family and friends,
I am one of Aunt Shirley's niece and also she is like a stepmother to me as well because she cared and took care of me a lot as a toddler.
Aunt Shirley and I had a very good relationship.
This is a lady who was not afraid to touch me,bath me or rub me down in ointment while other family members were due to a scaly skin condition I had.
She was never afraid to kiss and hug me as if I were her own child.
My Aunt Shirley was always a dressing Diva and never had a strand of hair out of place
I am definitely going to miss her laugh and her famous words" terrible terrible terrible "
I love you Aunt Shirley and you are now in paradise with Uncle Frank and the family
Your loving niece,
Janice
