BERNICE BEKAVAC

Obituary of BERNICE BEKAVAC

BERNICE BEKAVAC
(Nee Wazny)
1938-2022

With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Bernice Bekavac on October 3, 2022. Bernice passed peacefully with her family at her side.

Bernice is survived by her husband of 62 years, John and her sons John (Debbie) and Joseph (Neilla) and grandchildren Katie (Lewis), Geoffrey (Megan) and Mitch (Kaleo) as well as her sister in Poland, Janka.

Bernice was born in Ruda Rozaniecka, Poland. As a child, Bernice and her family were taken from their home to a concentration camp and then to Germany to labour.  They were liberated by the Russians and walked back to Poland returning to an empty home.

Bernice came to Canada in May of 1960, where she met John. They married in November that year and built a beautiful life together. Bernice and John have lived on the same street for 58 years surrounded by truly wonderful neighbours.

Bernice worked for many years in the bakery at the Dominion Store on Main and Jefferson. She was a devout Catholic and was an active member of the Catholic Women’s League for many years.

Her greatest joy in life was seeing her family together. She took great pride in her cooking and gardening and was always eager to feed anyone who came through the door. Bernice loved to spend time at the cottage in Grindstone and was a lover of animals.

Bernice battled several illnesses bravely until the end.

She will be missed by many.

Thanks to the staff at Grace Hospital, especially Nurse Harold for his compassionate care.
