Obituary of MATTHEW SMITH GLOVER

Matthew Glover

Dad passed peacefully on February 5th, 2024 at the age of 86 after a short illness.

He was born at Hall o’ Barnweil Farm, Ayrshire, Scotland in 1937, the youngest of 6 children. He was predeceased by his parents Andrew and Annie Glover, sisters Mary Hopkin and Netta Logan, and granddaughter Andrea Cotterill. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eleanore, children Veronica (Robert), Andrew (Sandy), David, and Eloise (Jacob), grandchildren Nicole (Matthew), Kenneth (Victoria), Afton, Hugh, Ewen, Maria, Eleanore and Jacinto, and great grandchild Isla.

Dad was a quiet man who “just got on with it”. He was a farmer to the core, and worked from dawn til dusk to make a life for his family. He loved his animals, tending his crops, working with the machinery, and being his own boss. Farming is not for the faint of heart, and Dad taught us all the meaning of hard work. In his lifetime, farming changed immensely, from using manual labour and heavy horses (which he loved to ride home from the fields), to tractors and other machines. He kept up with technology, which helped him take care of his animals and land, but he was also wary of technology which was intended to replace the human touch, and observation of animal health. He could turn his hand to whatever needed done, and was always around to help us with whatever projects we had going on. He saw an opportunity to give us a better future, by moving to Canada in his 50th year. When most people are considering their own retirement, he was thinking about our future. Moving to Canada brought new adventures, and he was up for the challenge. He forged a life here, using his many talents and skills to become an award-winning hog producer. No matter what was going on, the animals needed his care, and he never failed them, even in the worst that the Manitoba winters had to throw at him. In his spare time, he loved playing golf, building and renovating at home, and landscaping his garden. In the last few years he has enjoyed being near family, growing his garden, keeping up with all his sports on TV and spending time with the love of his life, Mum.

In accordance with Dad’s wishes he has been cremated, and his ashes will be scattered in Scotland at a later date. There will be a private family memorial at a date to be determined later in the year.
