Obituary of ALEXANDER ANTHONY NOVAK

ALEXANDER NOVAK

Secure in his faith and embraced by the love of his family, Alex embarked on his final journey on April 19, 2024 at the Grace Hospice.

Alex was born on November 19, 1927 in Narol, Manitoba, the seventh of seven children of John and Eleanora Novakowski.  Having spent his formative years growing up on the family farm Alex developed an exceptional work ethic that served him well through his lifelong service to his family and community.   Alex loved working the land and never lost that passion.  It was in his blood. He loved to work with his hands.  Whether it was building the family home or the world’s greatest insulated doghouse, he had an innate instinct for building and knowing how to get things done.  Alex had a sense of great purpose in his life driven by his values of respect, honesty, and fairness.  He was a man who demonstrated these values through his actions, not words.

In 1944 Alex met his future wife, Therese, his muse and the love of his life.  Together for 80 years, they built their home and raised their family of four children.

Alex’s career at the Canadian National Railway spanned 37 years, starting as a labourer and retiring as Supervisor of Roadway Materials.  During that time, he continued to farm, and became the General Chairman of the CBRT&GW union.  He was active in Provincial politics.  He served his community as a member of the River East School Division Board of Trustees for 17 years, including as Chair of the Board.  Alex was an active lifelong parishioner of Corpus Christi Church and loved singing every Sunday in the Church choir.  He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and Chair of the Church Building Committee.

Survived by his wife Therese, children Claudette (Tom), Robert (Debbie), Charles (Sonia), and Sherrie; grandchildren Kyle (Anna), Kalev (Kat), Samantha (Tyler), Angela (Carlos), Michaela (Cory), Danielle (Dana), and Matthew (Marisa); and great-grandchildren Isabella, Herbie, Willow, Henrik, Jayden, Luna, and Addison.

The family would like to acknowledge the extraordinary care and support that Alex received at Riverview Health Centre and the Grace Hospice over the past two months.
