Obituary of JOSE SANTOS SILVA

Jose Santos Silva passed away peacefully with family by his side on Friday, April 19, 2024 at Oakview Place at the age of 93 years. He was predeceased by his brother Joaquim Jr., and his parents Joaquim and Laura. Jose is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia, and their son Joe (Naomi). 

Jose was born in Batalha, Portugal where he and his brother grew up and went to school. Jose emigrated to Canada in 1960 looking for a better life, and found work as a bricklayer. After establishing himself in Winnipeg for two years, he went back to Portugal to look for a wife.

In 1963 Jose married Virginia and she followed him to Winnipeg six months later where, in December of 1964, their son Joe was born. 

Jose retired in 1995, keeping active with his love of music, electronics and mechanical repairs, always tinkering in his basement workroom with broken radios, TVs and stereos. Ever curious, and an avid reader, Jose was always up to date on current and political affairs and could speak comfortably on many topics.

Jose and Virginia would often travel, spending time in Mexico and taking bus tours in Europe, as well as visiting family and friends back in Portugal.

The family would like to thank the staff at Seven Oaks Hospital and at Oakview Place for taking such good care of Jose for these last 8 months.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St., Winnipeg with Msgr. M. Comeault presiding. Viewing will be available prior. Entombment will follow at Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Ave.
