A TRIBUTE TO A BROTHER AND A FRIEND HON. CHIEF SIR SYDNEY UKONU JP.
The news of your demise sent shrills across my veins and that of my wife, your famous ‘baby’. I shouted, how are the mighty fallen? The rude shock could have caused an undeserved situation except that the spirit of God intervened to bring some relief.
According to the book of Ecclesiastes chapter3:1-8, there is time for everything that God has made and in particular verse 2 which bears “A time to born and a time to die”.
Secondly, “in the midst of life we are in death of whom may we seek for succor, but you, oh lord”. The Bible we read says, we should not mourn like those without hope. God knows and takes care of every situation in our lives. We have known each other for quite a period of time. You have not relented in your activities and contributions to both the community and the church. You have contributed immensely to the growth of music in St. James’ church Amaimo 1. Your leaving this planet at the age of 88 is according to our maker’s decision and will.
Your children , in-laws, grandchildren, relations, Ukonu and links and entire St. James church greatly mourn your departure. You will only be remembered by what you have done.
Good night! Hon. Sydney, the gentle man
Good night! Chief Osochiaga
Good night! Soft spoken Sir Sydney
Continue to rest in the bossom of your creator
Sir Steve Oguzie’s family
Your Brother and Friend.

ADA DADDY (AS YOU CALLED ME) BIDS YOU FAREWELL. I was opportuned to be with you during your last days in the hospital. I can say I cherish those days I took care of you in the hospital. I saw you as a VERY STRONG MAN. You fought that sickness until the day you took your last breath. I cried most nights seeing you pass through pains but I made sure you never saw my tears. The memories of the 2 weeks I stayed with you in the hospital break my heart. Your hospital room became a prayer room where hymns and worship songs were constantly song . God bless all the Priests from the Hospital Chapel who made out time to come and pray for you in the hospital on a daily basis and at the same time counseled us. We prayed fervently for your healing. A one month sickness that shook my entire being. God knows why he allowed this. Daddy, you were my mentor, my HERO, my confidant, my prayer warrior, my adviser. The list goes on. You are a FATHER everyone would love to have. A Christian to the core. I have no doubts, you made heaven. Three days before you passed on, you did a remarkable thing that made me know it would soon be over. As I held your hands, you removed them from me, said a short prayer in my presence, made a sign of the cross. And that was your final communication with me until you passed on. OBI AGBAWALAM!!! We didn't see this coming. Daddy, you were always healthy. You never missed your drugs. You did your exercises regularly. You have never been hospitalized in your life until the 13th of July 2024 when sickness struck and you fought this sickness until the 15th of August 2024 when God called you home. It is well. Knowing how close you were to us, your children, your inlaws and your grandchildren makes me wonder how we're going to hold on without you. You were our HERO. A very intelligent and peaceful man. A CHRISTIAN to the core. You played a double role since Mummy passed on 22years ago. You were both our FATHER and our MOTHER. We made sure you were happy. We made sure you were healthy. We made sure you were well taken care of. When sickness struck on the 13th of July 2024, we took turns from our different locations to stay days with you in the hospital. If only the care and love we showered on you could keep you. But we cannot question God. The love and care you had for us cannot be explained. You didn't want to hear we were sick or in any form of problems or difficulties. Your constant calls, daily prayers, care and frequent advice explain what a father's LOVE is. You were in the hospital when I had my second daughter. I can never forget how you drove from Owerri to UPTH Port Harcourt to witness her birth. You held my hands and prayed for ne as I came out of the theatre. Our children don't joke with you. It took me some days to summon up the courage to tell them you were no more, and they wept that day. I don't know how we're going to move on without you. I really don't know. Your passing hit me so hard. You gave us the BEST during our childhood. You made us understand the meaning of prayers (remembering those early mornings when we all gathered to pray before the activities of the day). Indeed you had all the qualities of a GOOD CHRISTIAN FATHER. Ezigbo Nnam, you lived well. I know you made heaven. ADIEU my Precious Dad. We love you forever. Ada Daddy bids you FAREWELL Lady Chigozie Nwanguma (nee-Ukonu)- First child.

A Tribute to My Grandfather, Hon. Sir Sydney Ukonu
I stand here today as the second of my grandfather's 18 beloved grandchildren, reflecting on the immense impact he had on each of our lives. My grandfather, affectionately called me, "Angel Divine" because he called all his grandchildren "Angel,". The name Angel remains a guiding light in our family.
My Grandfather watched us all grow from birth, and I am so grateful he lived to see me turn 23 before he passed. His presence was a constant blessing throughout my life.
Grandpa accompanied my Mom Onyii three times to visit me while I was in still secondary school, and each visit was filled with warmth and pride. Two years ago when I graduated from Covenant University, my Grandfather was full of joy. He called me on the phone immediately and poured his blessings on me. His blessings still speak volumes till date, and will forever continue to speak volumes.
My Grandfather's gentle spirit, wisdom, and kind heart touched everyone around him. He had a unique way of showing care, not just through words but through his actions. His thoughtful presence always created a comforting atmosphere, and he never missed a chance to guide us with love and grace.
In memory of my grandfather, I want to honor the kindness he brought into our family. His love for his children, grandchildren, and everyone he met was evident in everything he did. He taught us invaluable lessons about integrity, kindness, and the importance of family. While we will certainly feel his absence, the lessons he instilled in us, the values he lived by, and the example he set will forever remain with us.
Thank you for everything, Grandpa. You will be deeply missed. Your legacy lives on in the cherished moments we hold dear, and you will forever remain in our hearts. Grandpa, rest in perfect peace.
With love,
From your overall Second Grandchild,

A Tribute to My Grandfather, Hon. Sir Sydney Ukonu
We gather today to celebrate the remarkable life of my grandfather, Hon. Sir Sydney Ukonu. As we reflect on his life, we are reminded of the profound impact he had on all of us. My grandfather was a man of great intelligence and unwavering integrity. A proud graduate and American citizen, he valued education deeply and encouraged those around him to pursue their dreams with diligence and passion.
During his lifetime, he consistently preached the importance of doing what’s right, instilling in us the values of honesty, hard work, and responsibility. His dedication to his family was truly inspiring. He worked tirelessly to ensure that my mother, her siblings, and the entire family had every opportunity to succeed in life. He showed us that true strength lies in commitment and sacrifice, and he modeled the qualities of a loving and responsible parent.
My grandfather had a special bond with all of us, especially with me. He called me; "Angel Wisdom.
Twice, my Grandpa accompanied my Mom Onyii, to drop me off at school when I was still in secondary school at Bishop Okoye Spiritan Secondary School, Rivers State. Then, he stayed with us in our house in Port Harcourt for a few months, and those were truly special times. He imparted so much wisdom and understanding, living up to the meaning of my name, Wisdom.
When my grandpa visited my school for the first time, he was greatly impressed by the unique buildings, the nurturing environment, the teachers, and the advanced technology labs. It reminded him of his own days at Kings College, Lagos, where things were done with the same level of excellence and precision. His admiration for education never wavered, and he took great pride in seeing me learn and grow.
During his stay in our home, I developed a deep connection with him, even as young as I was. I learned valuable lessons in morality, respect, and humility just by observing and helping him with little errands. All the errands I ran for him, he always said; "Thank you". He never stopped appreciating people around him. Those moments with my grandfather remain some of the most precious memories of my childhood.
As we honor him today, let us carry forward his lessons of compassion, diligence, and integrity in our own lives. His kindness, intelligence, and work ethic have left a lasting legacy that we will always cherish. Grandfather, you will forever be remembered in our hearts.
We will miss you dearly,
From your Grandson Wisdom Toni-Ojiako (Honeyboy)

A Tribute to Sir Sydney C. Ukonu - My Father-in-Law.
Oh Death! Oh treacherous death!! You invade and snatch lives of our treasured ones when least anticipated. Death though inevitable, a ransom we are ignorantly destined to pay irrespective of age, gender, tribe or race, rich or poor. Every death is highly painful to dearly beloved ones regardless at what age it occurred. We are here at this momentous funeral ceremony though unequivocally in love and faith to celebrate the life and times of a mentor, an icon of peace, a remarkable man, an exemplary man, my father in law,” Daddy”, Sir Sydney C. Ukonu who unfortunately is a victim of ignoble death. He passed on at the glorious age of 87. He lived a long and fulfilling life – a life marked by deep faith, love and commitment to his family and his creator. Though his passing after a brief illness in a hospital in Washington, DC on 15th August 2024 has left us with profound sense of loss, we also feel comforted knowing he has found peace in the arms of the lord he had devoutly served in spirit and truth.
Daddy was more than just a father-in-law, a father, blessed with six adorable children (Chigozie, Onyinyechi –my wife, Nwadiuto, Ukachi, Ekeoma and Binyerem) and grandfather to several grandchildren too numerous to mention here – he was a pillar of strength, a guiding hand, and a source of endless love. He was a loving, a devoted father and a grandfather whose wisdom and kind-hearted spirit shaped the lives of all of us fortunate enough to be part of his family. He was always in contact with his children, keeping tab with their progress and wellbeing. His love for humanity also extended to social media where he also garnered several Facebook friends who always followed up with his inspiring articles and responses. In his unbeatable caring and looking out for his children demeanor, he was eager and prayed relentlessly for my nuclear family to succeed in relocating abroad. When we eventually did, he was the first person that received the good news with overwhelming excitement and equally prayed for God’s blessings in our newly sojourned country. His advice and words of encouragement were gifts that will remain indelible with us forever.
A devout Christian, “ Daddy” lived his faith in every word, every action and every decision. His unwavering commitment to God was not only inspiring, but also comforting to all who knew him. He was a benevolent and charismatic believer. The family nightly devotion before bedtime and the morning ones were sacrosanct. His faith was the foundation upon which he built his life, and he passed that same faith to his children, sons/daughter-in-laws and grandchildren. Even in the final moments of his life, his trust in God’s plan never wavered. While on the sick bed, the only thing paramount to him was his belief in prayers, which he requested earnestly from every family member and insisted we continuously remain steadfast and prayerful.
As a grandfather “Daddy” was a beacon of warmth and joy. He cherished his grandchildren, delighting in their laughter, presence, encouraging their dreams, and sharing stories filled with lessons of patience, perseverance and love. He had a way of making everyone feel special, giving his time and attention freely, and always leaving a lasting impression on those around him. He knew the name of every grandchild and called each with a prefix “Angel……..” He never missed sending birthday wishes and oftentimes followed with a call for personal interaction.
Although his passing has left a space in our hearts that will never be filled, we know his spirit lives on in the lives of those he touched. His love, his values, and his unwavering faith are part of his legacy – a legacy that each of us will carry forward in our lives.
As we say adieu, we are reminded that death is not the end, but the beginning of eternal peace for those who believe. “Daddy” has run his race, fought the good fight, and has now entered into the joy and bosom of his Lord. We love you, while we will miss you very dearly, we shall take consolation in knowing that you are resting perfectly at peace, embraced by the love of God. Until we meet again, rest well in the glory of Heaven. AMEN.

I never imagined writing this tribute would be so difficult. I can still hear your voice and see your face, and it’s hard to accept that you won’t be here anymore. Grandpa, you were a man full of wisdom and so much love. You loved everyone around you, and you were so happy to celebrate with people. You were a true man of God and a model Christian. I will not forget how you always posted prayer points and bible verses on your WhatsApp daily, which always inspired me. I remember how you always referred to me as Angel Destiny and you were so proud of all my achievements. You were one of my biggest supporters and you always gave me hope and continuously prayed for me. Anytime I had good news, I was always excited to share it with you because I knew that you would be so happy and proud. Hearing this news was so heartbreaking to me and till today it still hurts so much. Grandpa, please know that you will always be remembered and never forgotten because you have touched so many lives and brought smiles to a lot of people. You have left a legacy that will continue to inspire and guide those of us who were fortunate enough to know you. Your love, kindness, and wisdom will live on in our hearts and in the lives of those you touched. I will forever love and remember you.

*A Tribute to My Beloved Father, Hon. Sir Sydney Chukuma Ukonu*.
The fear that grips my heart now is unbearable. July 13th, what seemed like just another day, turned into a nightmare when you noticed your legs could no longer support you. You were taken to the hospital. We thought it was a passing issue—nothing serious—but as days turned into weeks, it became clear that something far more ominous was happening. You were transferred to a hospital in Washington, DC, where doctors performed surgery to correct the issue.
We thought you were recovering so well because you looked strong initially. Daddy, your spirit was as strong as ever, and we were filled with hope. My siblings took turns to stay with you in the hospital by your bedside, holding your hand, praying for you and speaking words of love. Everyone has visited. I was next. I was so close to rushing to Washington, DC, to be with you, to tell you how much you meant to me, and to pray for you. But before I could even leave my base, death came swiftly, and you were gone. The torment of not being there, the endless video calls that can never replace your words, your love, haunt me every waking moment. I cry, Daddy. I cry, and I cannot stop.
The agony of your passing is made even worse by the project we were working on together—my new book. You were my biggest supporter, my mentor, my guiding light. You encouraged me to finish the book quickly, urging me to publish it as soon as possible. I thought it was just your usual loving push, but now I know. You were unknowingly racing against time, and neither you nor I realized it. You didn't get to finish reviewing my book before death stole you away. Now, I don't know if I can finish the remaining chapters without you. Your voice, your presence, your faith in me—it was everything. Without you, Daddy, I feel lost. The spark that once drove me is gone, replaced by a void so deep, I don’t know how to go on.
Even at 87, you were so full of life. Your voice, clearer and stronger than most people half your age. You weren't just my father—you were my hero, my mentor, a pillar of strength for our entire family. Now that voice is silent, and the man who was my rock is gone. The pain is unbearable. Daddy, my world feels empty without you, and the silence is deafening.
The loss is overwhelming, but even in the depths of this grief, I am grateful for being my dearest Dad. I will carry your love, your lessons, and your memory with me always. You were, and always will be, my hero.
Dearest Lord, if roses grow in Heaven, please help me pick a bunch and give them to my parents. Tell them I love them deeply. Daddy, you have joined Mummy in paradise. Please, enjoy Heaven together.

TRIBUTE TO A LIGHT THAT SHINES IN DARKNESS
SIR SYDNEY UKONU
It is with pains in my heart that I write to bid farewell to my father in-law Sir Sydney Chukwumankpam Ukonu. Through my relationship with him, I have come to know him as a special breed of God’s creation, whom I can hardly equate with any other. He is a light that shines in the darkness.
As a son in-law, he sees me as his son rather than a son in-law, and thus created a father – son relationship which has endured over the years. As a father, he stands tall as a guardian angel to me, my wife and my children. He stands in the gap for all of us. From the first day that walked into his house on the 14th of September 1997, I was captivated with admiration by the kind of reception that he gave me, and I knew that I was in the right place. From that day till he breathed his last breath, our bond continued to grow.
He is a perfect example of a man that walked with God. He dedicates his life to keeping up God’s commandment of love. With God’s love, he loves his children the same way he loves his neighbors. With his resources, he gives and caters for those who are in need. His prayer life is one that needs to be emulated. He believes in the power of prayer, and that with God, all things are possible. He made sure to pass this on to every member of his family. Once you are in his house, be sure to keep awake till the night prayer is said, and to wake up early for the morning prayers. This is a routine that can not be broken no matter what the condition is. Through his prayer life, he has touched many lives as he stands in the gap for people far and near. It is said that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. It is out of this act of family prayers that he lunched out the daily online prayer and ministration outreach through which he has encouraged and blessed many lives. This he continued till God called him home.
As a Christian, he believed in identifying with the body of Christ (the Church) through regular attendance of church services, and active participation. He has played important roles in all the churches that he has associated with. He became a pillar of support to some of these churches wherever he goes. He loves to sing hymns and choruses all the time. He was a good chorister in his younger days, and infact had a coral group where him and his wife were members. He believed in, taught and counseled people on good family relationship, drawing examples from the life that he lives. The love of Christ in him taught him to be humble, and through his humility, he has drawn many people God. He was for many years, the President of Christian Fathers Fellowship in the Owerri Diocese, and through this, he impacted on the younger fathers. He was one of the earliest Knights of St. Christopher in the Owerri Diocese, rising to the leadership of the sacred order for many years, and had remained in good standing.
Community wise, he believed in community building and maintaining peace, order and development in the community. He played major roles in community development that earned him chieftancy titles, which for his humility, he preferred not to be so addressed, only to be addressed as a Knight.
He is a lover of education and has encouraged people to go to school, and in some instances, had sponsored the less privileged people to acquire education. On his part, he attended the famous Kings College Lagos at a very tender age, and thereafter became one of the pioneers of the University of Nigeria Nsukka. He followed this up to ensure that all his children received the best of education.
His death is a big and painful shock to me, my family and indeed to all that know him. But as the bible tells us, we can not morn as those without hope. We believe that he has seated at the right hand of God, and hope that we will live well to meet him in Christ bosom when the time comes.
Rest in peace my dear Father in-law Sir Sydney Ukonu. I and my family love you dearly and will continue to remember you.
Sir Emmanuel Nwanguma
First Son-inlaw.

Grandpa,
I love you so much. We always speak on the phone through the WhatsApp video. You loved me so much, advised me, and prayed for me. I never saw you in real life. My family and I were planning to visit you in the US in a few months and stay with you. I was planning to tell you a lot of stories. I cried so much when Mummy told me you have gone to heaven and we will not see you again.
Granpa, you were a very good man.
I will miss you.

Right from a young age, whenever Grandpa came around or I got to see him, it was an exciting time.
One of my fondest memories with him was when I always fell sick as a child and he would let me sleep in his bed so I could feel better.
He has always been my role model in many ways than one and inspired me when picking what career to pursue when I started university.
His love for his grandchildren and the way he referred to us as his angels was always something I deeply appreciated. As you would always call us your angels, I rejoice in the fact that you are now in heaven and get to be our guardian angel.
Till we meet to part no more.
Your angel Victory.

Dee Sydney, that is how I remember you. The gentle, kind man that was my dad's friend and confidant. I remember mummy telling me how to say your name, o wu, "Dee Sydney" :). It wouldn't be until I got older that I understood how far back to the early 1960s you and my dad struck up a friendship that lasted a lifetime and transcended to your families.
I always admired the gentle strength you carried with you everywhere and your words of wisdom. The times over the phone, your voice was always so strong it was hard to reconcile that with all the years you had under your belt
.Your clarity with history was comparable to non! When daddy answered his own call few years back you availed yourself to help us clarify timelines and events. I always wondered how you remembered every detail. I am grateful for the book you gave me years ago. You authored it and in it was a chronicle of how the church was brought to old Owerri Diocese and Ikeduru at large.
My young curious mind was able to catch a glimpse of the price our forefathers paid to bring Christianity to our land. Thank you for that priceless gift! Your love for the church was unquestionable and your dedication said it all.
Dee Sydney, you were truly a gift and we will miss you. I always looked forward to reading the tributes you wrote to honour many of your contemporaries when they joined the church triumphant, many of whom I knew growing up.
Your family is blessed to have experienced your love and guidance first hand.
We all are grateful to God that we knew you.
You have fought a good fight, you have finished the race, you kept the faith! .....

There are people you think will live forever ( I know not possible), still, in my books you were one of them. Hmmmm so the last I hear your voice would be December last year when you called your cousin. Sir Sydney Ukonu , a devout member of the Anglican Communion and a lover of music. I am certain that your children still give thanks to God because you lived! Jeee nke oma Uncle Sydee. Olive Oluchi Maduwuba

He was truly a remarkable person, embodying the roles of both father and mother, and radiating love and warmth. Although I never had the chance to meet him personally, I’ve heard countless stories of his kindness and the positive impact he had on others. He will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives he touched. May God grant the family the strength and comfort needed to endure this profound loss.

Dearly beloved Family - God's Own Children-in-Christ:
A CONDOLENCE MESSAGE, PRAYER, & TRIBUTE:
We are, indeed, deeply sorry to hear, with great sense of loss & shock, though with unflinching trust in our Loving Heavenly Father's Omniscience in Christ Jesus, the sad news of the recent Home Call of your dear father & grandfather, who was to us & many, an utterly dependable friend!
He was a true & Distinguished Christian Father in God's Church & Noble Knight of St Christopher, An outstanding Christian Administrator and utterly trustworthy Business and People Manager; a man of outstanding integrity, a dedicated, truly 'born-again Christian' & distinguished Anglican Churchman & trusted Community leader & mentor to many.
With you, his good lady wife, has, over the years, led a distinctive Christian Family life, both at the home Church and local Community, wherever God's Call and the vision for selfless, Christ-Centred and Family focused cum home based, service with integrity in Christ, took them over the years: A vision for life which Hon Sir Sydney & his good lady, had painstakingly passed on to their dear Children to whom they were affectionately dedicated & for whom they spared no effort or sacrifice to 'raise in the love & fear of the lord' - just as their own parents, in their own time had, under God in Christ, had done for them!
(Eph 6:1-6; Prov 22:6).
In consequence and without doubt, this is indeed, a bereavement that touches us all! Hence, we write with a full & sincere heart to assure you, his (their) faithful Children and Grandchildren and, indeed, all who will, no doubt, miss him, of our united love in Christ and prayerful good wishes for God's special Grace to abound for you all and all yours, Home and Abroad, and indeed, for all true friends, who, like ourselves, are particularly touched by such a painful bereavement at such a difficult time in our national and global history.
May you all, and indeed us all, find the Grace not to mourn like those who have no hope, (1 Thes 4:13-18), knowing the Biblical Promise that, for those who truly believe, and live out, by word and deed, in public, and private, the Message of the Gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, whenever the Saviour Calls or Comes, "to be with Him" in that blissful Splendour of His Sacred,
Glorious and Eternal Presence, where there is no more sickness, pain, fear or sorrow, "is by far better", Phil 1:23!
May this Hope and the renewed assurances of our prayerful solidarity in Christ fill you all with, God our Loving, ever Present & Eternal Heavenly Father's Comforting Presence, Peace, and True Hope and keep making each one of you, a True channel of His Healing Love and Saving Faith in Christ Jesus, to many, until He Comes.
Furthermore, it is indeed our earnest prayer that the laying to rest of the remains of your dear father, and grandfather, Noble Knight of St Christopher of the Anglican Diocese of Owerri, Pioneer Editor/Organising Editor of Owerri Anglican Diocesan Synod Resolutions & Synod Reports, I may speak positively louder of the Glorious Gospel of our Dear Lord & Holy Saviour Jesus Christ, the Only True Lord & Genuine Saviour of all humankind, than his very life: Amen!
The one and only Sir Sydney, in every way, a truly Distinguished Noble Knight of St Christopher - Bearer of Christ', by word and deed; Foundation member and Pioneer Vice- President of both the Anglican Christian Fellowship (ACF) and the All Anglican Men's Association (AAMA) of the Anglican Diocese of Owerri; An Eminent Anglican of Nigeria and Secretary to the Owerri Diocesan Eminent Anglicans; to us as a Family, 'De Sydney’ with his dear younger brother, Albert (Alii) and Elder sister, Anty Agnes ('Ada Nne'), was an utterly selfless and trusted Senior Friend, Advisor and Confidant, who was always there at every moment of need.
We shall all miss him, though you, his immediate family will no doubt miss him sorely- a true Nathaniel of our time, who is now in a better Place: in the Bosom of the Father'!
Again, please know that this comes with our united love in Christ and renewed assurances of our prayerful solidarity at this particularly difficult time and always.
In His Shalom, with every blessing, Amen & Amen.

Tribute to Sir Sydney Ukonu: A Life Well Spent
It is with a heart full of both sorrow and gratitude that I write this tribute to Sir Sydney Ukonu—a father, a leader, and a gifted writer whose impact on those around him will never be forgotten.
Sir Sydney was not just a man of words but a man of action. His writing was always thoughtful, articulate, and full of insight. He took the time to write about people on special occasions and during their passing, always capturing the essence of their lives with his unique touch. Today, I write in honor of him because that’s exactly what he would have done.
Beyond his words, it was the life he lived that truly spoke volumes. He led with integrity and compassion, and the love he had for his family was evident in everything he did. His children, some of the most united and supportive I have ever seen, are a living testament to the strong foundation he built at home. Their bond, nurtured under his guidance, reflects the values he instilled in them.
To me, Sir Sydney was more than just a figurehead; he was family. He was my mother’s boss for many years, but he became a father to us all. His leadership extended beyond the professional realm and into our personal lives, shaping who we are today. Under his visionary leadership, the ACFF conference of the Diocese of Owerri was birthed and became one of the many landmark projects he coordinated and implemented in the Diocese. He started the ACFF while working closely with my mom, and together they brought this vision to life—a testament to his dedication and ability to turn ideas into reality.
Sir Sydney’s life was a life well spent—a life of service, of love, and of unshakable faith. He touched so many lives, and his legacy will continue to inspire us for years to come. As we honor his memory today, let us remember the lessons he taught us through his actions: the importance of family, the power of unity, and the value of living a life that reflects the principles we hold dear.
Rest in peace, Sir Sydney C. Ukonu Ksc . Your legacy lives on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing you.

A SAINT IS GONE FOR GOOD.
What a life well lived!
He was a good man, a good hearted and loving father, a progressive, a great councillor, a writter and author of books, including inspirational books, an academia, an encyclopaedia, a preacher of the true Gospel of Christ, a lover of humanity and a fervent lover of Christ. A peace maker, a church man, a kingdom builder, a kingmaker, a great nationalist. Honourable Sir Sydney C. Ukonu has bowed out to take his rightful position in the Kingdom of God. May His Soul Rest in the bosom of the Lord Christ, Amen.

TO LIVE IN THE HEARTS OF THOSE WHO LOVE YOU IS NOT TO DIE.
Today, we gather to celebrate the extraordinary life of a man whose legacy will forever inspire us. Hon. Sir Sydney Ukonu, your life was a shining beacon of faith, love, and kindness. Though you've left this earthly realm, your spirit and teachings remain deeply etched in our hearts.
As a devoted servant of God, you exemplified humility, gentility, and Christ-like love. Your life was a testament to the power of faith, touching countless lives with your gentle spirit and generous heart.
"The righteous will be remembered forever" - Psalm 112:6
As a father, you nurtured and guided all your children with compassion and integrity, instilling values that will endure through generations.
"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it" - Proverbs 22:6
As a grandfather, you personified the beauty of familial bonds, leaving a legacy of love and wisdom in the hearts of your grandchildren.

As a Knight of St. Christopher in Owerri and Ikeduru Dioceses, and a soldier of Christ, you stood firm in your faith, inspiring many with your unwavering commitment to God's work.
In our sorrow, we find solace in the truth of 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14: "Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who sleep in death... For we believe that Jesus died and rose again."
Dèè Sydy, though we mourn your absence, we celebrate your life, love, and faith. You will forever live in the hearts of those you loved and who still love you.
Indeed, to live in the hearts of those who love you is not to die.

Until we meet again in glory, may your gentle soul continue to rest in peace. Amen.

Dear Uncle Syd,
I am usually good at writing down exactly what I feel, I have tried so many times to write a tribute for you and I still don't know where to start or finish.
The relationship we developed was special, you were like a second father to me, you constantly checked up on me and was always very concerned about my welfare. Your invaluable fatherly advice and direction especially in politics will be missed.
Your mind was intellectually active, you were my biggest praise singer and critic. I was assigned the most difficult task of informing my dad about your demise, as expected, he was shattered, I am not sure he has recovered from the shock. The bond you shared was pure.
The vacuum you have left may never be filled, we are devastated but comforted knowing that you spent most of your life working in God's vineyard and preparing to go home to your maker.
Rest in peace Uncle Syd, May God reward you with eternal rest in heaven.

To God’s beloved Children of Hon. Sir Sydney Ukonu,
Good men who are in Christ don’t die!
Few weeks before Sir Sydney died, he called me to request of the phone number of Venerable Chuks Iwuagwu. According to him, he said he was concerned about reconciliation on the issues surrounding the Anglican Church in North America and Nigeria and needed to do a wide consultation before writing a long article that will help in reconciliation. Sir, I have been waiting for this article, but Biynerem’s call to inform me of your death shattered me. My late father was a good man and Sir Sydney reminded me of him. I thought good men should not die, aye, they shouldn’t! Sir Sydney preached and modelled Psalm 15: “Lord who may dwell in your sanctuary?” Sir Sydney has gone to dwell in God’s sanctuary, Hallelujah!
Sir Sydney met me after the service, one day, around 2000/2001 and invited me to his house. I was terrified! “Maybe I preached a bad sermon,” I thought. I went with the expectation of a gentle correction. I was wrong. When I got to his house, he said to me,
“Chinemerem I’m encouraged by your pastoral care to the youths and the elderly in St Cyprian’s, please keep it up. Don’t allow material things in ministry to distract you.”
Sir Sydney was a true servant of Christ, he was not just a gentleman, he was a righteous man! He was an encourager. I can also recall how he summed up my ministry at St Paul’s Church Ubomiri in one of his well-crafted articles published on Facebook:
“I have discovered an Anglican Church in the Diocese of Owerri, which is practicing something, close to how a Church should fund itself, and stop over-taxing its members. In the past three years, St Pauls Anglican Ubomiri, under Rev Canon Chinemerem Uche, has embarked on economic ventures that will soon liberate the Church from the financial bondage which its peers suffer.”
However, there’s a remarkable sermon I witnessed Sir Sydney preach while I was a Church Teacher at St Cyprian’s Anglican Church FHE Owerri. I can never forget the theme of that sermon. As at that time, his late wife had been diagnosed of a terminal illness. He climbed the pulpit, did a good x-ray of the vicissitudes of life and how he in particular, has had a fair share of sufferings. Then he concluded,
“In the midst of the sufferings that becloud me, I have decided to count my blessings, God’s blessings outnumber our woes.”
Dear lovely Children of Sir Sydney, count your blessings, life may be painful, but God’s blessings outnumber the sorrows!

Tribute for Grandpa Sydney by Adaugo Alison-Ukonu
Rest in Peace, Grandpa Sydney. You are loved by many and will forever be missed. Thank you for your impact on all our lives. Thank you for all the yearly birthday wishes you sent me, and the daily scripture messages you posted that reinforced my Christianity. You were so caring and compassionate to all your loved ones. Your last message to me was "How are you doing, Adaugo?", yet again showcasing how caring you are by taking time out of your day to check up on me. It pains me every day that I did not reply to that message on time. But now I look up to the heavens knowing you are watching over me proudly. I promise to continue to make you proud by living the fulfilling life you prayed for me to have. I will never forget you, dearest "Uncle Grandpa".

A tribute to our dear SIR SYDNEY UKONU
The news of the transition of our senior friend and icon of Christian service, Sir Sydney Ukonu was a numbing shock. For those who knew him well, he was a living legend in his devotion and service to God, the church and Christendom. A transparent hard working result focused achieving manager of men and resources that can be depended on. He was a trained and experienced corporate manager who became a great asset in God's hand to the church.
Sir Sydney served the Anglican Diocese of Owerri ADOW extensively under our revered past Bishop and Archbishop B C Nwankiti (1967-98) and Bishop Cyril Okorocha (1998-2018). During their tenures Sir Sydney served in key units and service arms of ADOW as Secretary, president, chairman, coordinator or program manager. His managerial talents impacted and grew the church ministry in the Men's Christian Association of the Diocese, the Diocesan Medical Committee, Board of Governors of ADJS, Mbieri, the first Chapter of the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, Owerri, Endowment Fund Scheme and the Diocesan Clergy Welfare Team, as well as the Bishop's Foundation for Mission & Development. Funds raised from this Foundation were deployed to execute projects like boreholes in Church establishments, modernizing the Diocesan Printing Press, the Diocesan Wafer Project, the Christian Voice Weekly Newspaper, a Modern Medical Referral Centre, offering free medical treatment to the Clergy and other staff of the Diocese, etcetera. Synod hosting was catered for from this fund.
Surely the Lord granted Sir Sydney the privilege to play active part in work of God in ADOW for which he will be remembered and blessed abundantly in heaven. Sir Sydney was outstanding and was like one we would all vote for to walk with God and be like Enoch. We will miss him.
This is why his transition will remain so sudden and painful. He was a rare gem and an icon, a faithful soldier of Christ, articulate and transparently honest, endowed with wisdom, goodness, humility, devotion and true fear of God. Sir Sydney will be greatly missed by the church, family and friends who held him in high esteem. He will be remembered and held high in our hearts.
He now rests in the presence of his Lord, Master and Savior. We pray God for comfort and solace for all who loved him. He was a model and an enviable example of Christian character, leadership and altruistic service to God and humanity. May the light he showed us shine bright in our hearts to encourage us to desire and follow the footsteps he modeled for us. Amen.

A Tribute to my Beloved Uncle Sir Sydney Ukonu: A Life of Grace, Love, and Devotion
In the book of John, Jesus speaks of Nathaniel, saying, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is no guile." When I think of my beloved uncle, Sir Sydney Ukonu, this verse resonates deeply, for he was truly our Nathaniel, a man without guile—a man of pure heart, steadfast faith, and unwavering love.
Words fail me! Sir Sydney was not just my uncle; he was a father, a mentor, and a beacon of light in our lives. After my father, his younger brother, passed away, Uncle Sydney stepped into the role of father with grace and humility. He did not seek to replace our father, but to honor his memory by being there for us in every way he could. His love was a constant, his presence a comfort, and his wisdom a guiding star.
I remember a cold winter evening when I was traveling, and my phone had died, leaving me unreachable. When I finally arrived at the train station, there he was—standing in the freezing cold, scanning the crowd with worried eyes, waiting for me. This was not a small act, knowing how much our family dreads the cold and it spoke volumes about the depth of his love and concern. That moment endeared me to him in a way that words cannot fully express.
During the dark days when Abuja was rocked by bomb blasts, my uncle's voice on the phone was a lifeline. He called me every day, pleading with me to leave the city and come home to safety. His concern was not just for my physical well-being but for my peace of mind. He was the first to always comment on my WhatsApp status, offering words of encouragement, sharing Bible verses, and uplifting us all with his morning exultations. His faith was unshakeable, and his love for God was the foundation of everything he did.
My father often told us how it was Uncle Sydney who set the example for him to never smoke or drink—a tenet he kept all his life. This was the kind of influence my uncle had; he led by example, and his example was one of righteousness, integrity, and discipline.
When my husband and his family visited Maryland, Uncle Sydney welcomed them with open arms. He calls my husband "Ogo," which means in-law, with a warmth that made us all feel at home. Just four weeks before he passed, we visited him again. He hugged my husband tightly, a gesture filled with love and acceptance. His love for us knew no bounds, and he was always there to celebrate our birthdays, sending messages to us and our children, making us feel special and cherished.
People say he was 87 and that he had lived a long life, but that does not diminish the pain of his passing. We were not ready to let him go. How could we be, when his love was still so needed, his wisdom still so valuable, his presence still so comforting? It breaks my heart to hear that he was "old enough to die," because in our hearts, he was timeless. This was the time we needed him most, the time when his guidance and love were more precious than ever.
Uncle Sydney, you were more than just an elder; you were the cornerstone of our family. Your legacy is one of love, faith, and unwavering devotion. You have left an indelible mark on our lives, and though you are no longer with us in body, your spirit lives on in the values you instilled in us, the love you showered upon us, and the memories we will forever cherish.
Rest in peace, dear uncle, knowing that you have fought the good fight, you have finished the race, and you have kept the faith. We love you, we miss you, and we will carry your legacy forward, guided by the example of your life—a life lived without guile, in the presence of God, and in the love of your family.
Uncle, your in-law Austin and our children, Kosi, Kamara, Kochava, and Kaylah, mourn your passing deeply and miss you more than words can express. Your love for them was as profound as your love for the rest of us, and they, too, carry the weight of your absence. Your memory will forever be a part of their lives, as they grow up hearing stories of your kindness, your faith, and your unwavering love. We all miss you Uncle, and your legacy will continue to live on through us and the generations to come.

TRIBUTE TO SIR SYDNEY UKONU (OUR INLAW)
The news of Daddy Sydney Ukonu's passing to eternal glory drove a wave of shocks to my family. Especially after we've called in, wishing him quick recovery, with much trust that he will be discharged in no time.
We were particularly concerned about the family he left behind, how will they cope? was the ready question, considering the bond and enormous love which he planted in the family. He was a huge inspiration and immeasurable support to the children and grand children whom he treated with much affection. This vacuum is deep.
From my experience having known Sir Sydney Ukonu who also is our inlaw for over two decades, everyone who had encountered him in anyway must have had one or two virtues learnt. His love for family, is topnotch. He treated friends and even strangers with much love. He was so passionate about the things of God and readily committed to it. A good historian with rich archive of sweet memories, he had with family and friends, usually presented as memoirs or posts with such intellectual flare, rich in knowledge of life experience. A good guide to beginners of life's sojourn.
As we mourn Sir Sydney Ukonu, lets take solace in the fact that he led a fulfilled Christian life and is now with Christ at the right hand of God, who is the only rewarder of good works, which daddy epitomised.
Please accept our heartfelt condolences.

TRIBUTE ON CHIEF SIR SYDENY UKONU.
I am writing this tribute, first as a Lion of a medieval age. Secondly as an in-law.
Sir Sydney belongs to the age in UNN history as an " Ancient Lion ". Ancient in the sense that he was a pioneer student of that Nigerian only named Higher Institution, i.e. UNN. The age of ancient era ended in 1966. From 1967 to 1975 was CME under " Medieval age ". I belonged to medieval age. In otherwards I am a younger Lion to him.
Secondly, I am writing about Sir Sydney as my cherished and lovable in-law. To all intents and purposes, Sir Sydney was married to my late Niece Lady Georgy Ukonu nee Chukuezi, whose mother was my mother’s youngest sister, who in-fact lived with my mother in her formative years.
Sir Sydney, as an in-law was very very friendly amiable, kind and always ready to answer any calls from the in-laws. He was so close to my family that one might think that his wife was my mother’s daughter.
Sir Sydney was a great thinker, a philosopher king. He was meticulous and seasoned in whatever he was undertaking. In addition to his self will his intellectual preoccupation with the techniques of modern management attracted his friend Late Chief Dr Emma Iwuanyanwu to employ him in his group of companies, after his normal retirement. Sir Sydney was a man of talent and ability, couple with his impeccable honesty.
Sir Sydney was deeply attached to his God and played a prominent role both in his home church and CATOL. No wonder he was invested as a Knight of the Anglican Church. Besides, on his peaceful withdrawal from Hadel & Enic, the Bishop brought him close to chair some sensitive Diocesan Boards.
Oh my God we shall miss his smiles his eloquent and unbiased historiography.
Sir Sydney, as a great Lion and in-law, I love you, but God loves you the more. Apostle Paul in his last days on earth did tell his Christian followers that he finished his Christian race, he was now waiting to collect the Crown from his master Jesus. Sir Sydney you have completed your Christian race with joy and gladness, receive your merited crown from your maker.
Chief. Sir Gody Emeka Ekezie (Lion and in-law).

TRIBUTE TO MY DEAREST UNCLE SIR SYDNEY CHUKWUMA UKONU FROM YOUR NEPHEW TOBECHUKWU ALISON UKONU (TBOB)
Indeed, this has been a tough year, the shocking news received on Thursday 15th of August 2024 reminds me about the tragedy that befell us on Sunday 4th of March 2012. It took a while to put myself together to write a tribute in loving memory of my remarkable Uncle Sir Sydney Ukonu, who for me, became a beacon of strength and guidance in the Ukonu family since the loss of my father late Venerable Albert Ukonu. Uncle Sydney's unwavering leadership and caring nature shone through as he took charge of all Ukonu family and links’ matters, always checking in with me and offering thoughtful advice on both business and life's challenges. A true Professor in the School of Life, Uncle’s keen historical insights and captivating storytelling endeared him to all. At over 80years, he became a Facebook influencer.
On my recent birthday, Uncle Sydney's usual thoughtful gesture of requesting my recent portrait photos to enable him to craft a heartfelt message is one unique gift I will now miss. His writings touched many hearts, leaving a lasting impact that resonated deeply with everyone who gets to read them. His absence leaves a void as we mourn the loss of a brilliant mind and a one-of-a-kind individual, who we hoped would have lived even longer to continue to be the stronghold of the Ukonu legacy for years to come.
Uncle Sydney's final act of spearheading the restoration of the fallen tower of St. James Anglican Church Amaimo 1 mirrors the spirit of Nehemiah, symbolizing his dedication to rebuilding, reconciling, and restoring. While we grieve, there is comfort in knowing that he has reunited with his parents and most of his siblings in the Church Triumphant, having fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith till the very end.
Uncle, the memory of our last brief video call, where you bid goodbye from your hospital bed, lingers on, a poignant farewell I didn't anticipate. Journey well, my dearest Uncle Sydney, my wife Chioma and my kids Adaugo, Chimdindu and Akolam are all heartbroken that they will not hear from you again. Please convey my warm regards to my father, your cherished brother, in the eternal realm. Until we meet again, your nephew Tobechukwu, who you affectionately call Tbob, will treasure your legacy and the profound impact you've had on us all. Adieu!

A TRIBUTE TO A WONDERFUL SOUL.
It has pleased our Lord God Almighty to call back His beloved son, Sir Sydney C. Ukonu Ksc. If it's what humanity can counteract, then his departure would have been resisted. But that's not to be. Sir Sydney was an epitome of goodness and humility. I first came in close contact with him soon after my NYSC program in Imo State by 1983 at Christ Ang Church Owerri where in an effort to extend my services to the church which I offered all through my service year as a form of community service, he opted to assist the church by giving out his newly constructed bungalow to accommodate me. Such a gesture was and still is rare.
He didn't stop at that. My return from University of Ibadan in 1985 after my second degree back to Owerri he threw his weight behind me when I was directed by the Ang. Diocese to establish foundationally the yet-to-be-commissioned new Cathedral then, at Ugwu Orji now known as CATOL. As the Pioneer Master Chorale Sir Sydney was not only a pioneer member, but the first Chairman of the new Cathedral choir. Together with almost all the members of the Ukonu family of Amaimo, now in lkeduru Diocese, the choir arrived with a bang and was the toast of the Diocese within a very short period of time. Sir Sydney became a mentor, a guardian, an enabler, and an inspiration as my services lasted in CATOL. And his influence on my life still persists to date.
My family owe Sir Sydney a world of dept as it affects my musical career. Indeed, I boldly assert that without his staunch belief in my capacity to navigate the murky waters of musical practice a professional troupe birthed since 1987 shouldn't have been. He profoundly mobilized his family members, including his late wife Georgina, and top of them being the late Venerable Albert Ukonu, my bosom brother from another womb, to join the Shepherd Singers of Owerri (my chorale) and saw to the troupes' distinctive contribution to the development of choral music in Nigeria. Again, Sir Sydney volunteered to chairman the troupe, giving it a place of pride as far as the genre is concerned. I can proudly say that God sent me to Imo State in the guise of NYSC but chiefly to be developed through my destiny helper, Sir Sydney.
Record of his role and service to the church and principally in the CATOL choir, Owerri and Shepherd Singers of Owerri cannot be exhausted in this platform. On the day CATOL honoured me with a grand award, I looked round and remembered Sir Sydney Ukonu, but alas, he was off the shore. He symbolized everything noble, honorable, truthful, fatherly, and a lot more to all and sundry.
As he has taken his bow, I can ostensibly say without any sense of contradiction that he has run the race and kept the faith; and now waiting for the crown of glory. Good night, my mentor! Good night, my guardian!! Good night, my destiny helper!!!

TRIBUTE TO A GREAT FRIEND
(By Sir Timothy Anuchauka)
Today, it is my solemn duty here, to briefly eulogize Hon. Sir Sydney Chukwuma Ukonu. J.P. D,C.F. who had been a unique and cherished friend of mine since the early years of the 1960s. Sir Sydney was a man of high integrity with a sound moral and educational background, a product of King's College Lagos, a biographer skilled in the use of the English language. He was a pioneer Graduate of Economics at the University of Nigeria Nsukka. (UNN).
Sir Sydney first came to the spotlight as an Economist in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Soon after other business organizations, both foreign and indigenous, scrambled to engage his services in Management or Chief Executive Office positions. And he became a star in the Nigerian industrial space. In the midst of his spectacular rise and achievements, Sir Sydney did not forget the duties he owed to God and humanity.
During the Nigerian civil war, Sir Sydney headed a Govt. Department that helped to save millions of lives of sick and starving Biafran women and children, and those of wounded and dying Biafran soldiers. Glory be to God!
Thereafter, Sir Sydney devoted his time and energy serving God through the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion. As a Knight of the Church, he served in various capacities in the lay administration of Owerri Anglican Diocese under Bishop Cyril Okorocha. As a father, Sir Sydney raised a wonderful family where a son was named 'Binyerem' and a daughter named ‘Nwadiuto’; a family held together by an unbreakable bond of love and unity!
As a friend, it had always been difficult for me to find anyone else as reliable and responsive as, Sir Sydney. And, as a fellow Christian, I was always drawing inspiration from his staunch belief in the power and grace of God Almighty, a belief he expressed in his book, " BY HIS GRACE ".
This is the profile of my blossom friend!
I am personally convinced that Sir Sydney had already made Heaven. And I therefore hereby, urge his son Binyerem and his sisters, as well as his numerous relations and friends to bear his transition to glory with the hope that one day, we shall all meet in Heaven to part no more, in Jesus' name. Amen.
Signed: Sir Timothy Anuchauka.

TRIBUTE TO MY LATE UNCLIE - SIR SYDNEY UKONU
My heart grieves to have to write this tribute for a passing onto glory that was so unexpected. I had communicated quite frequently with my dearest Uncle during the months following my late brother’s passing and he was completely in charge. Advising, directing, guiding, encouraging us.
Uncle Sydy, I was looking forward to, elevating you to Pa Sydy - my favourite thing to do when my uncles and aunties turn 90. I guess I'm keeping my tribute lighthearted because in all of your strictness and calm wisdom, you always communicated humorously.
Thank you so much for being a true, guardian, mentor, advisor, and spiritual father. Thank you. You have of course been received with dancing, and music in your heavenly abode. Something you did very well for the kingdom of God here on earth.
Till we meet again.
Your niece, Ngozi N. Ugoji.

TRIBUTE TO LATE HON. SIR SYDNEY CHUKWUMA NLEMADIM UKONU BY THE FAMILY OF LATE PA GODWIN IWUNDU.
It is with heavy hearts that we write this tribute to honor the life of Late Sir Sydney Ukonu (De Sydy).
The death of Sir Sydney Ukonu was a rude shock to our family, because he was a man who was upright, disciplined and was our close family friend, and also the mentor of our late father; Late Pa Godwin Iwundu (De Goddy).
Late Sir Sydney Ukonu was an honorable man and a good adviser, he heavily impacted positively on the life of our father while in their working class era. Sir Sydney Ukonu doubled down as our father’s mentor and trained him as a stenographer after the civil war. Their relationship really lasted and culminated to the marriage of our father to his niece, Theresa Iwundu (our mother).
Late Sir Sydney Ukonu was the fourth child and second son of late Pa Samuel and Mama Catherine Ukonu. His parents were long time Christian agents before they retired. He worked in various places like the ICI, PZ (Nig) Limited, Bata shoes, and Hardel & Enic Group of Companies in 1980, where he served as the first Executive Director/Operations Coordinator. After retirement from his job, he worked as an Administrator in the Owerri Anglican Diocese.
Late Sir Sydney Ukonu was a man who had a way of helping everyone. He was a man who had a listening ear, a helping hand and a heart full of kindness.
Though he may no longer be with us in body, Sir Sydney Ukonu’s spirit will forever live in our hearts and of all who knew and loved him.
May he rest in perfect peace, AMEN. Goodbye Worthy Knight.

Sir Sydney was a man of many parts. I am certainly short of words because nothing I write will be enough to describe him. Uncle Sydney, you were one of a kind. I feel so sad to use "the past tense" for you now. You were like a father to me and I always consider myself a part of the UKONU Family. However, you and my father, Ezinna Daniel Nneji Onwukwe ("Uncle Dan") were like siblings and till date remained so. This friendship was initiated by your late kid brother Venerable Albert Ukonu (who was my father's Physics student) and who was coincidentally my elder brother's marriage counsellor.
Uncle Sydney, you and my father were both knighted as "Knights of St Christopher on the same day in the Anglican Communion Diocese of Owerri, Imo State of Nigeria in the year 1993. You always encouraged me and never missed to comment on any of my posts. Therefore, when the news of your departure got to me, I was shocked and devastated. And so it was for my father because a great man, an iroko has fallen. Uncle Sydney, just like my father ( your friend) you maintained your integrity and unwavering faith in God in the Anglican Communion Diocese of Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. The challenge to us who are living is to do our best to maintain the legacy you have left behind in following the footsteps of Jesus no matter the difficulties we may encounter. Adieu, Uncle Sydney.Adieu , sleep on till we meet to part no more.

Beloved Sir Sydney, my elder brother, my friend, my role model, the Counselor, encourager and supporter of pastors, how else shall I qualify you?
The news of your passing hit me hard. I didn't see it coming, not even the faintest hint! It rendered me speechless for a while and in my heart I was about to look up and start asking why. Then I remembered that this had happened to me before and held my peace while the tears flowed. I was sure heaven had gained one of the best still left here on earth up to that point. I cried because earth had lost one of the best still left here to make it better up to that point. I consoled then, myself and now others, as I recall that "IGWE NILE GAJE N'UZU'! (what happened to you is the appointment that everyone must keep).
De Sydyy, you lived a fulfilled life. You accomplished much. You raised a Godly family. You influenced many lives including mine. You lived for and served the Lord and His Church. Your life blessed humanity as a whole. You show us what God intended the man He made to be, not by word of mouth only, but also by your impeccable character and exemplary life.
The thought of those one on one conversations with you worms my heart. I am a better person for having you as my older brother/friend/counselor. Thank you sir.
Sir Sydney dear, like Paul and other saints since Paul, you fought a good fight, you kept the faith to the very end, you finished well. May the day you receive that crown Paul spoke about (the day of your CORONATION) be great. May your rest be one of peace. Good night my big brother. I will see you in the morning.

HON SIR SYDNEY C. UKONU, KSC, JP, WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN
It was a privilege to work under Hon. Sir Sydney C. Ukonu, KSC, JP., then Group Executive Director of Hardel and Enic Group of companies. I had been assigned to do my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) primary assignment with the company and thereafter, I was offered a permanent position in 1985. My career trajectory was positively impacted by the experience I gained working with him. As a seasoned administrator and economist, I learned a lot from him, from the board room to management of personnel and administration. Sir Ukonu educated me, as a young graduate, on money management skills and encouraged me to start investing in shares.
He was a prolific writer. I read his books and looked forward to reading his postings on Facebook. One of his books “By His Grace: An Anthology of Awesome Testimonies” has been quite insightful to me. It chronicled his tribulations and underscored the grace of God that always prevailed. With strong Christian background, Sir Ukonu epitomized a true believer and lived by the Christian doctrine. He was kind, compassionate, humble and treated everyone with dignity and respect.
Sir Ukonu made an immense contribution to humanity. He touched so many lives in different ways through counseling, prayers, guidance and being supportive. He was very supportive of me when I had the misfortune of losing two brothers in quick succession, and then my mother. I remember the constant calls, the prayers and inspirational messages from him. He, indeed, left an impressive legacy and by the Grace of God, it will be a source of comfort to his children, family, friends and all those who knew him.
Rest in perfect peace, Sir.

TRIBUTE TO THE GREAT COUNSELLOR AND A PROLIFIC WRITER OF HIS
TIME- LATE SIR SYDNEY UKONU.
I will start my tribute with what we have in Psalm 116 vs 15- which says that “precious in the
sight of the lord is the death of his saint”.
Life is so unpredictable and difficult to fathom. Today, a loved one is here and tomorrow he will
be seen no more- he fades away like the stars of the sky. What a world? There is no bigger
mystery than that.
Dee Sydy, as was fondly called by all his close relatives was a mentor to many families. His
married life was very enviable by all that knew him and his wife lady Georgy, no wonder young
couples were gathering around them for marriage counselling and to listen to his words of
wisdom. He was an excellent group and community leader. He served God to the best of his
ability and was a dedicated knight of St. Christopher in the Anglican communion. He was a
disciplined focused, reliable, fearless, loyal, extremely selfless and intelligent Christian who was
endowed with a lot of wisdom. He was a great and prolific writer who lived a purposeful, healthy
and fulfilled life.
We still find it difficult to believe and accept that he is no more. Tears keep running down our
cheeks each time we remember his death. The impact of his life on the people that were
opportune to come across him will be reckoned with eternity. We are consoled by the fact he
lived an exemplary life, leaving behind massive and incredible legacies of love, diligence,
commitment and excellence.
Dee, you cannot be forgotten so fast. God loves you most and he has done his will. May his
name be praised always.
Adieu, brave man of peace and a beacon of motivational talks. I give God all the glory for the
privilege of relating with you and my late sister, lady Georgy your wife. Rest in peace till we met
to part no more, Amen.

Tribute to My Beloved Brother-In-Law, Sir Sydney Ukonu
It is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that I pen this tribute to my dear brother-in-law, Sir Sydney Ukonu, whom I affectionately called "Dede Sydy." It seems almost impossible to believe that the voice I heard on the ninth of July 2024, full of life and warmth, has now been silenced. Odikwa Egwuooh! Truly, an Iroko tree has fallen, and a man of peace has left us.
Dede Sydy was a man whose presence brought comfort and guidance. He was the kind of person who, with just a few words, could lead you safely through any storm. He was gentle and kind-hearted, someone who wouldn’t hurt an ant. As the scripture says, "His ways were ways of pleasantness, and all his paths were peace." Thank you, Jesus, for the gift of knowing and loving such a remarkable man.
His love for and fear of the Lord were evident in every aspect of his life. This deep reverence for God was something he not only practiced but also instilled in his children and in everyone who had the privilege of crossing paths with him. He put God first in all he did, beginning each day with prayer and Bible study. His commitment to seeking the will of God every morning and sharing the word with others was an inspiration to many. Even now, people express how much they miss his daily Bible passages that brought light and hope to their mornings.
Dede Sydy's contributions to our family and community were immeasurable. In 1977, he and his late wife, Lady Georgie Ukonu, crafted the first choir robes for the dedication of our home church, St. James Anglican Church Amuzu Amaimo1. Their generosity didn’t stop there. They also tiled the entire floor of St. James Church, from the altar to the western end, with ceramic tiles. This act of love and dedication transformed the church, giving it a glorious look and making it the pride of the area.
Even in his later years, his passion for God’s house never waned. His recent efforts in calling for the rebuilding of the fallen church tower stand as a testament to his unwavering faith. He was the first to donate half a million Naira towards the cause, leading by example, just as Nehemiah did in the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls. Truly, Dede Sydy was the Nehemiah of our time.
Dede Sydy had a heart for the poor and the needy. Every Christmas, he would send money to the vicar of our village church to be distributed to the widows and less privileged members of the congregation. His kindness knew no bounds, and his generosity touched countless lives. He was an epitome of a righteous man, a light in the darkness, full of compassion and grace. He uplifted many who were downtrodden, providing financial support and words of encouragement when they were needed most.
When I learned of his ill health, I prayed fervently, trusting that God would restore him to health. But God’s will prevailed, and though it is difficult, I have come to accept it. In my prayers, two scriptures came to me the night before Dede was called home. The first was Isaiah 57:1-2, which says, "The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart; the devout are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil. Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death."
These verses brought me some solace, as I realized that Dede’s passing was in God’s perfect timing, sparing him from future pain and trials. It was evident that, in his final prayers, Dede surrendered his life to his Maker, just as Jesus did when he said, "Lord, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not my will, but Your will be done." Dede allowed God’s will to prevail, and for that, we do not question God.
Rest in peace, dear Dede Sydy. Your legacy of love, faith, and service will live on in all of us who were blessed to know you. We will forever cherish the memories, and your influence will continue to guide us as we walk in the paths you so gracefully paved.
Your Beloved Sister in-law,
Bertha.

Your Beloved Niece,
Nneoma Albert-Ashibuogwu.

Tribute to Sir Sydney Chukwuma Ukonu from your “Second Daughter Inlaw,” Mrs. Chioma Ukonu (Tbob’s Wife)
Today, we gather to honor the memory of a remarkable man, Sir Sydney Chukwuma Ukonu, or Grandpa Sydney—as my children call him, whose unwavering support and encouragement have left a lasting impact on my life and the lives of those around him.
From the very beginning of my marital journey into the Ukonu, Sir Sydney Ukonu had always been welcoming and supportive of my endeavors. When we lost my darling father-in-law Ven Albert Akolam Ukonu, his younger brother, Grandpa Sydney, became my second father-in-law. He showed genuine interest in my family’s progress and the many business ventures my husband, his nephew, and I got into. He even reviewed my pitch deck for a global business competition I attended last year in the United States of America to give a glimpse of how “hands-on” he was with our endeavors.
Academically, as a great academician, Sir Sydney encouraged my academic pursuits and believed in me wholeheartedly. When I shared my decision to pursue a master’s degree, he was not only supportive but inspired me to aim higher and consider a doctorate. He envisioned a future where I could become an authority in my field, and his faith in my potential fueled my ambition. His encouragement reminded me that anything is possible with dedication and hard work.
Spiritually, he was a guiding light. He consistently urged me to stay engaged in God’s work and to give generously, especially to our beloved St. James Anglican Church in Amaimo, Imo state. His commitment to the church and the community was a testament to his character, and he instilled in me the importance of service and devotion.
Family meant everything to him. He adored my husband and his nephew and took a genuine interest in our children’s progress. I will never forget the pride he expressed when he shared a heartfelt Facebook post celebrating my 13-year-old first son when he preached at our church on Children’s Day. His support was a beautiful reminder of the importance of family bonds and the joy that comes from celebrating one another’s achievements.
As we remember Sir Sydney Ukonu, let us carry forward his legacy of encouragement, faith, unity, and love for family. His spirit will forever inspire us to pursue our dreams, engage in our communities, and cherish the bonds we share. He may no longer be with us in body, but his impact will resonate in our hearts and actions for years.
Rest in peace, Sir Sydney Chukwuma. Thank you for everything. We will deeply miss you: Tobechukwu, Chioma, Adaugo, Chimdindu, and Akolam.

TRIBUTE TO A GREAT UNCLE.
It is with deepest sorrow and sadness that I write this tribute.
You were an Uncle in a million who loved and cared for his family and everyone around him.
Uncle Sydney was forthright and a very principled man. One could trust Uncle Sydy being sure of his firm stand.
My Uncle loved God and things of God and worshipped him with commitment. He was a good family man who made his home a place of welcome.
Your death came as a rude shock and we wished we had more time to continue to appreciate you.
God in his infinite wisdom knows best.
May your beautiful soul continue to rest peacefully in the bossom of the Lord.

When the shocking news of your unexpected demise reached us, our immediate reaction was that a personification of truth, integrity, humility, and gentleness, had vanished from the face of the earth. You never were inclined to making trouble or picking quarrels with anybody.
Sydy, while you lived, you demonstrated absolute dedication and surrender to the will of God.
You kept close to your Bible, culminating in your sharing of your Verse of the Day and Daily Prayer, which, through the internet, you circulated frequently to hundreds of thousands of your target group. Your congregational sermons in the church showed your commitment to your personal crusade to reach out to members and contribute in saving their souls.
You are one of the few who went on pilgrimage to Israel and came back to chronicle your experience in a book, MEMOIRS FROM THE HOLY LAND, published in 2002. It was another manifestation of your interest in the things of God. In that book, you ironically compelled the reader to see the Holy Land as you saw it.
In Stanza 5 of Hymns Ancient & Modern, Number 165, the composer, I. Watts, says,
"Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly forgotten, as a dream,
Dies at the opening day."
Be this as it may, Sydy will not fly forgotten in areas where he had played an outstanding and indelible role. He will be remembered forever by his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered forever by members of Ukonu and links. He will be remembered forever by followers of his Verse of the Day and Daily Prayer.
He successfully trained all his children through higher institutions and saw them settle down in their respective homes. To all the families of his children, we pray that God Almighty will grant you the consolation which you very much deserve at this time of trial.
His memory will ever remain green in our minds.
Amen.

A special tribute to my ‘daddy’
This tribute honours an extraordinary individual who deeply impacted my life and that of my family. The news of your passing brought a profound sense of loss that is difficult to express.
You lived a life filled with love, faith, and wisdom, known for your kindness, strength, and empathy. I first met you 42 years ago when you and your wife, the late Lady Georgie Ukonu, sponsored our wedding in Owerre Nkworji Nigeria. Since then, you have touched our lives in ways we are forever grateful for. I call you "Daddy" because you filled the void left by the loss of my father and brother, consoling us with wisdom and God's word.
During my student days, I visited London from your house for the first time, where I was chauffeured to the airport. In the 1990s and 2000s our family trips to Nigeria were incomplete without spending time at your home in Owerri, where we always felt welcomed and safe. The memories and bond we created there are irreplaceable.
Your devotion to Christ was evident in your dedication to morning prayers and your role in supporting the Cathedral Church in Owerri. Your prolific writing, particularly *By His Grace: An Anthology of Awesome Testimonies*, reflects your deep faith and the challenges you overcame with God's help. You taught us that success is not just about achievement but about overcoming life's trials through God's grace.
You were a man of God in both actions and words, a devoted father, and a cherished grandfather. I am forever grateful to have known you and the values you imparted. Your legacy will live on in your family and everyone whose lives you touched.
Rest in peace with Christ ‘Daddy’

Tribute to a fine gentleman
I got to know Sir Syney Ukonu in the early 70s when we worked at Bata Nigeria Ltd. He was the Area Manager in-charge of the Company's operations in the then East Central and present day Rivers and Bayelsa States. With his elevation to National Retail Sales Manager, he was relocated to the Headquaters in Ojota, Lagos. That was the beginning of our closeness. Later developments leave me to wonder if knowing 'Dee' as I used to call him, was actually God's own making.
By the time we left Bata Sir Sydney had already made such a positive impression on me that when I was to wed I approached him and his wife to do us the honour of being the Wedding Sponsors. That was the beginning of a relationship that ĥas endured till today.
Sir Sydney Ukonu was an accomplished family man and true Christian. I remember with nostalgia, the family's early morning prayers my family used to participate in, each time we visited. The orderliness and love in the family were admirable. These have stood the children in good stead today.
I cannot thank Sir Sydney Ukonu's family enough for their support to my wife who had to relocate to Owerri to further her education when I left Nigeria for the UK. She became part of the family and was taken good care of and made very comfortable until the completion of her studies and eventually joining me in Uk.
The old saying reads that to live in the hearts of those we love is never to die. Sir Sydney Ukonu has not died because he will forever live in the hearts and memories of all those who knew him.
Adieu, Fare thee well. Our Lord will receive you in his bosom and grant you Rest of Peace.
Mr. Christian Nnajiuba.

Death is one of the few guarantees in life, and with advancing years the inevitability of death becomes all the more unavoidable. This however does not take away the shock and sadness at the loss of Uncle Sydy, an absolute colossus of a man who trod a righteous path that we would all do well to emulate. My memories of Uncle Sydy go back to my childhood which was spent growing up in the UK but punctuated with frequent visits to Nigeria. No visit home in the 90s was complete without a few days stopover in Owerri at the Ukonu residence. Indeed it was always one of the highlights of our trip. We were made to feel a part of his family from the daily morning prayer to dinner in the evening. Back in London it would be our turn to host Aunty Georgina (the late Mrs Ukonu) on her treatment visits and over the years we grew as an extended family rather than just family friends.
Into my adulthood and now with my own wife and kids, uncle remained to his last days as one of our most fervent cheerleaders, always ready to wish me and my wife and our kids a happy birthday or to comment and celebrate any of our achievements that he saw on Facebook. How we will miss his words of wisdom and affirmation. A mighty man of God has gone and left an unfillable gap. We are blessed to have experienced him in our lives and pray that his family know how lucky they were to have had him. His legacy will live on for generations to come.

This is my third attempt to write on my friend Sir Sydney Ukonu whom I affectionately call "Sydy". What do I write, how do I begin?.
Sometimes it is difficult to know what to say and how to say it when a situation as this happens. Fortunately this type of situation have been happening about to other people and we have been in the forefront of comforting and counselling. So i will start this tribute by requesting the Ukonu family to extend the comfort and counselling to yourselves.
Time like an ever rolling stream
Bears all its sons away
They fly forgotten as a dream
Dies at the opening day
We are all destined to die, but oftentimes, the timing takes us by surprise. My Friend Sydney's exit was sudden and unexpected, and has taken all and sundry by surprise. Sydy did not go early, but he kept God's time. It is God who determines the right time, and whose turn it is. Many people knew how closely attached Sydney was to his family and friends and the void his exit has created. But we want to believe that God's time in every circumstances of our lives is the best. We cannot question God.
I am tempted to recount the history of my relationship with Sydney. It would require a whole book to do justice to a relationship which spanned three to four decades. In his previous write- ups, Sir Sydney had already done justice as to how our friendship started, I refer my readers to that write- ups.
When a loved one is taken and we are left behind, it can raise all kinds of questions. In time like this Romans 8 Vs 28 can be of great encouragement. "We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose"
Your trust in God's loving sovereignty will comfort you in the midst of your grieve. I also want to remind the Ukonu family that when we sustain a heart - breaking loss, when grieve overwhelms our soul the saviour who gave himself on the cross reminds us that He is in control. Our greatest comfort in sorrow is to know that God is in control.
Sir Sydney was a core Anglican from a core Anglican family, his parents were native Anglican missionaries of the old - order and that old order upbringing influenced his positive activities in the church. His legacy at the Cathedral Church of The Transfiguration of Our Lord, CATOL Owerri can not be forgotten. He was a Lay Reader/ Preacher, Pastor, Warden and President of the initial Cathedral choir of Catol. He was a Knight of St. Christopher, he was in fact the Financial Secretary of Owerri Council for many years, before his relocation to the United States of America.
Sir Sydney witnessed series of heart break incidents. He lost his dear Wife Lady Georgina, followed by the death of his junior brother Venerable Albert Ukonu. This was followed by the death of his senior sister Lady Agnes Ugorji and his brother in-law Dr. Ugorji. These incidents could test any body's faith, but Sir Sydney stood resolutely by his God and never faltered. Since his relocation to America he has maintained his communication with his friends, we spoke at least once every week. Towards the end when Sir Emma Inwuanyanwu his very close friend died, I tried several times to reach him not knowing that he was in the hospital.
Looking at people who are dear to us, we see the past, present and future. There are things we do not want to happen, but have to accept. Things we don't want to know but have to learn and people we feel we can't live without but have to let go. It is wrong to mourn the dead, rather we should Thank God for the gift of such a Father and Mentor as Sir Sydney. Time may pass away but memories of our dear Sydney always stay, never forgotten, always loved by those he touched in the many areas he served.
My dear Sydy, you're special. There's only one You, your face and features, your voice, your style, your background, your erudition, your characteristics and peculiarities, your abilities, your smile, your walk, your handshake, your manner of expression, your view point, your generosity, every thing about you is found in only one individual. You.
I shall surely miss you my dear friend, to me you have not died, you have only gone before. Continue to rest until we meet at the feet of Jesus to part no more, Rest In Peace.
Your friend,
Sir Isreal Ekezie.

I first met Sir Sydney Ukonu when I joined St Cyprian's Anglican Church, Federal Housing Estate, Owerri, in 2000. He was then the Leader of Daniel Family, to which my wife and I had been assigned and it was his responsibility to welcome us to the fold. He went beyond that by his friendly disposition towards us and his commitment to motivate members to get involved in the affairs of the family and the church.
During meetings of Daniel Family, I noticed how he ran the proceedings with humility and respect for all, regardless of the social status of members. Among the members of the family then were elders like Sir Lucius Onyelike, Sir Philip Onuoha, Mr Onyekwere and others. These men and other distinguished members of the family impressed us with their commitment to the activities of the family and the church. This made it easier for us to emulate them and become integrated fully into the family and the church.
A man's personality is the product of the various levels of socialisation that he underwent in his formative years. Sir Sydney was a beneficiary of sound socialisation in the secular and spiritual dimensions. His father was a missionary of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) and he and his siblings were raised in the church, as it were. This affected his outlook on life greatly. He attended the elitist Kings College, Lagos and was a pioneer graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, who convoked on 15th June, 1963. Some members of that group include Prof Romanus Egudu, Prof Olisa Esedebe, Chief Nduka Eya, Mrs Grace Obayi(nee Nwodo) and Sir G.T.G. Toby who was Sir Sydney's lifelong friend and confidant.
He had a successful career in some highbrow multinational corporations, which enabled him to travel extensively in Nigeria and around the world. He later worked closely with His Lordship, Rt Rev Cyril Okorocha, Ph.D, to elevate the Diocese of Owerri to a prime position in the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). He had a larger than life image in the Diocese of Owerri and believed that a Christian must show modesty and exemplary conduct in the market places of life.
I cannot end this tribute without mentioning his writing skills. Sir Sydney was an adept researcher, and a great wordsmith. His published works show his articulate mind, excellent scholarship and a riveting attention to detail. His memory was electronic and he could recall with ease, many events that occurred in his childhood and younger days.
On a personal level, Sir Sydney was my senior friend, role model, and advisor. My relationship with him blossomed when he found out that we shared similar values, a common faith and a passion for writing. In addition, his father served as a church agent in my hometown in his childhood and he had fond memories of his family's sojourn there.
His passage at this time is not only a huge loss for his family and their links, but also for his numerous friends, associates and admirers.
May God comfort his family.
May his noble soul rest in peace.
Adieu, Sir Sydney.

Tribute to a beloved uncle
The sad reality of death hits yet again! Uncle, the news of your sudden transition to glory remains a huge shock to me. When I received the news that you had passed on, it suddenly dawned on me that for a while, I had not seen your regular WhatsApp statuses which mainly comprised the “verse of the day” from the YouVersion Bible app, and the prayers that accompanied it. Ever since your demise, I have read a couple of tributes in your honor and yet struggled to come to terms with the reality that you have left us.
Uncle, you were an epitome of godliness and a perfect role model to everyone who knew you. You were a devout Christian who loved God with all his heart and served Him diligently. You lived an upright life that we all should strive to emulate. History will always remember you for the positive influence you had in the lives of those who were privileged to encounter you in your lifetime. I have heard many people who are not biologically related to you express deep sadness over loosing you, and this shows how you had become an amazing father to them and how they have grown to love you. Indeed, you left an indelible mark in the hearts of many, and generations yet unborn will hear about you and applaud you.
The memory of the righteous is blessed (Proverbs 10 vs 7a). Uncle, I am confident that every time we remember you, we will always feel blessed that you were a part of our lives. One of the fond memories of you which I will always cherish is from my childhood days when my cousins and I would watch you and your siblings perform as a choir (Shepherd Singers) at numerous church events and music concerts. All we could see were men and women who loved God so much and loved to sing His praises. We all learned most of the songs and loved to sing along. I will also remember you for your efforts to keep us in tune with God. You never skipped sharing the “verse of the day” from the YouVersion bible app, and you also never skipped forwarding Ven. Ransay Okeke’s weekly Igbo sermons on Fridays.
Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints (Psalms 116 vs 15). Uncle, you ran your heavenly race in an applaudable manner, and we are confident that you have earned your crown of eternal glory. We will miss you so much, but it is well with us. There is no doubt that you are in a much better place, and your lovely soul has found the rest it deserves, in the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ. Adieu, God’s faithful servant. Enjoy your rest, till we meet again.
Lots of love,

TRIBUTE TO MY FOSTER DADDY
When I heard of your demise, I was shocked. It was hard for me to believe that truly you are gone. I wish it is not true. I wish you stayed till 100 years old. However, it pleases God to call you home at 87years.
Today, I am left with the teachings and sermons you taught me. You and my mommy gave foster care to me, instilled true Christianity in me and daily taught me the Bible and prayer. You enrolled me in children Sunday school and also allowed me attend church Bible study. I received Christ as my Lord while under your care. I will never forget to leave by the many lessons I have learned from you and to teach my children same. You also gave me good foundations in home keeping, education and sponsored me into the university . Again, you and your children sponsored my wedding. I and my husband are eternally grateful. You are indeed a good man and a true Christian. We miss you dearly.
It is hard to say goodbye. It is hard to say rest in peace. Selah!
Nevertheless, Adieu Rare gem. Adieu a True Christian. Adieu Daddy.

A Legacy of Faith, Love, and Kindness: Remembering Uncle Sydney Ukonu
With a heavy heart yet filled with gratitude, we honor the life of a man who touched so many people, our
beloved Uncle Sydney Ukonu. It’s difficult to describe the depth of the loss we feel, but it's even more
challenging to capture the fullness of his spirit in words, which was so deeply rooted in kindness, grace,
and a love that reflected the heart of God. We celebrate the life of a man whose presence was a gift to
everyone who knew him. As we grieve, we also reflect on the extraordinary legacy of love, faith, and
kindness that he leaves behind. Truly it is impossible to summarize such a life in a few words.
Uncle Sydney was a man of deep faith with a heart of gold. His love for God wasn’t just something he
spoke of; it was the foundation of his entire life. His faith was steadfast and unshakable, a quiet strength
that guided him through every challenge. He found peace and purpose in his relationship with God, and
that peace overflowed to everyone around him. In Uncle Sydney, we saw a living example of humility,
compassion, and the unwavering hope that faith in Christ brings. He was, indeed, a godly and God-fearing
man. His life was a testament to the faith he cherished. He didn’t just speak about God’s love; he lived it.
Whether in the quiet moments of prayer or through the simple acts of kindness he showed daily, his faith
was woven into everything he did. He embodied grace, was never too busy to listen to anyone who
needed his attention, was never too tired to lend a hand to anyone in need of his help, and was always
ready to share a word of encouragement to the discouraged and write long epistles privately or on his
social media platform in praise and encouragement of people he loved.
His love for family was immeasurable. To his family, Uncle was the bedrock, a solid pillar. He cherished
each one of his children, grandchildren, in-laws, and all that came across him, making time for all and
showing love and support in ways both big and small. He was indeed a rock, the one anyone could count
on for wisdom and guidance, and the one whose laughter filled every room he entered. His handsome
presence was a warm embrace that reassured everyone who came across him, making us all feel cherished
and understood. But his love didn’t stop with just his close family. Uncle Sydney’s heart was big enough
for everyone he met. He had a way of making people feel loved, seen, valued, and important. Whether it
was a neighbor, a stranger, or someone in need, his gracious spirit radiated in every interaction. He loved
without condition, offering kindness with no expectation in return.
It is impossible to measure the full impact of a life lived so well as his. He leaves behind a legacy of love,
compassion, and unwavering faith. Though we will miss him deeply, we find comfort in knowing that he
is now at peace in the presence of the Lord he served so faithfully.
As we say goodbye to you today, uncle Sydy, as we fondly call you. We are reminded of the profound
impact you have had on all of us. You have left an indelible mark on all our hearts. We will miss your
laughter, smile, wisdom, and loving spirit. But we know you are at peace now, resting in the presence of
the Lord you served faithfully. You’ve left this world, but your love and grace will stay with us forever.
Your life will continue to remind us of what it means to live generously, with a heart wide open to those
around us.
Rest well, Uncle. We love you deeply and will always carry your legacy of kindness, faith, and love in
our hearts.

TRIBUTE FROM A BELOVED IN-LAW.
Uncle Sydy, as we fondly called him, was a man whose gentle nature and wisdom touched everyone he encountered. From the moment I entered this family, he received me with open arms, never hesitating to extend his warmth and love. He wasn’t just a father-in-law to me; he was a father to us all.
I’ll never forget the last time we visited him in Bowie, Maryland. We arrived late, tired from our journey, but there he was—waiting patiently until 10:30 PM. As soon as we walked through the door, he rose, embraced me warmly, and with that ever-gentle voice, said, “Ogo, welcome.” That was Uncle Sydney—always there, always welcoming, with a heart full of love and a spirit overflowing with kindness.
His words carried a weight of wisdom, spoken softly, yet leaving a deep impression on anyone fortunate enough to hear them. Every conversation with him was a lesson, every interaction a reminder of what it means to live with grace, humility, and love.
We will miss you every day, Uncle Sydney. Your memory will live in our hearts, a guiding light through our days. Rest well, dearest father-in-law, until we meet again.

Tribute to a great Icon, Hon. Sir, Sydney C Ukonu "Ezigbo Nna St James Amaimo 1"
Dee Sydy, the news of your demise came with great shock to us, as you remained very active till the end. The impact of your death is likened to the fall of an Iroko tree. Alas, it won't be the same again!
Dee Sydney, you always called me "Ezinwunye Nwannem Nwoke". Funnily enough, your house at Owerri was the first in-law house we (Chinwe, my husband & I, in company of these beautiful souls that you have gone to meet: Mama Kezzy, Mama Maggi and Dee Ali) visited for late Papa Sam Ukonu's approval and blessings.
Your words were always calm and enriched with deep words of wisdom, thus, I thank God that we were also able to visit you twice upon your migration to USA.
I have always craved the love and unity that radiates amongst your children, which I didn't hide from you. We talked about this on January 24th 2024; after which you prayed for me, and generously let me know that the secret of your success is trusting God and making him your companion always.
Thank you for the weekly nuggets and follow-up. I recall the hearty laugh we had last Father's day when I called you "Ezinna", and with a smile in your voice you let me know the right term is "Ezigbo nna"; to which I responded "noted Ezigbo nna m". Who will take up this role now Dee Sydy?
Whenever the going got tough in St James Amaimo I, you stepped in and beckoned on everyone to follow suit. You always led from the front.
Heaven has gained a worthy servant. 'Ga ije gi nke oma Ezigbo nna m'.
"Sleep on, beloved, sleep and take your rest; Lay down your head upon the Savior's breast. We love you well, but Jesus loves you best, Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight."

Tribute to Sir Sydney Ukonu
Today, I reflect on the immense loss of a remarkable man, my favorite uncle, my father’s beloved elder brother, and my godfather—Sir Sydney Ukonu. His departure has left an indelible void in our lives that words seem inadequate to fill.
Sir Sydney was more than just family; he was a guiding light, a pillar of selflessness and unwavering faith. I remember with deep gratitude the way he prayed for me early this year, as I faced the uncertainty of major surgery. His prayers, both with me and for me, were a testament to his boundless compassion and his steadfast belief in God who he served Earnestly and taught us to do so too. His support was a balm for my anxiety, a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is a glimmer of light through the kindness of others.
His presence was a constant source of comfort and joy. I miss the smile on my face and the assurance I felt every time I saw that he had read my WhatsApp status. His encouragement and thoughtful comments were more than just digital interactions—they were moments of genuine connection that brightened my day.
Sir Sydney was a father figure to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His selflessness knew no bounds, and his life was a living example of how to give of oneself unreservedly.
I have found it difficult to share my thoughts on social media as often as I once did Because the trauma of his loss has made it challenging to engage in the ways I used to. Yet, his memory remains a guiding force in my life. His spirit is woven into the fabric of my days, inspiring me to strive for the same selflessness and grace that he embodied.
Thank you, Daddy, for everything. You will forever be remembered with deep affection and respect. May your soul rest in the peace you so richly deserve.

TRIBUTE TO MY UNCLE SYDNEY UKONU
Revelation 14:13 NIV
[13] Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.”
Philippians 1:21
"For to us to live is Christ and to die gain.
Dear Uncle Sydney, I am still trying hard to come to terms with the news of your sudden call to glory. I remember how in June, 2024 when I called my Dad, Sir G. C Maduwuba, who is your close 1st cousin to wish him a happy father's day celebration, he told me, you sent him money for the Father's day celebration. Since your sojourn to the United States, you have been very active on the social media especially Facebook. Anytime I post my Dad's birthday or his wedding anniversary, you were always quick to respond to my post stating how close both of you are and how that you were his best man during his wedding. Dad always speak greatly about you and with pride too. My last conversation with you on FB was on July 11th, when you posted UK and Bibi's birthday and I responded wishing them a glorious birthday celebration. Little did I know that it will be our last communication.
Growing up, I had a perception of you as a kind and gentle man. Indeed you were a good man and you lived the life of a Christian. You served our Lord Jesus Christ with great commitment. We will miss you on this side of heaven but we know you have joined the saints triumphant taking your much needed rest until that day when the trumpet shall sound. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 KJV
[16] For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: [17] then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
I pray for your children, sons and daughter in-law, your grandchildren that they will be comforted by the comfort which only the Holy Spirit can give. We will all miss you greatly. Keep resting in the Lord until we meet at the feet of our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Tribute To My Late Cousin Sydney C. Ukonu.
The late Hon, Sir, Chief Sydney Chukwuma Ukonu, (fondly called SC) was an amazing, honorable, kind-hearted, unforgettable, one-in-a- million cousin. He lived a dedicated and devoted Christian life, serving in different capacities in the Anglican communion and Church of Nigeria both at home and abroad.
SC words cannot express how saddened I was when I learnt of your sudden demise. I quickly remembered our last telephone conversation in June 2024.
During that conversation, I asked when you would come home to our dear town Amaimo. I suggested December, during Christmas celebration and your response was, “anyi lemmeni anya.” My beloved cousin SC, you will be greatly missed and we will not forget your support and contributions to Ukonu and their links “ogbako”.
However, our confidence and trust in God, compels us, that though you maybe away in the body from us. You are resting peacefully in the bosom of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ . In the midst of life we are in death, of whom may we seek for succour, but of thee , O Lord...
I am writing this with tear filled eyes and a heavy heart. Tears have been shed and are still falling since your demise. I cannot still believe that such a thing happened. Just after mourning my Late husband this happened, O death! where is thy sting?.
Daddy you brought so much joy, hope to my family more than you will ever know.
I salute you Daddy. I honour you for an infinite numerous reasons.
I celebrate you and I thank you for so much more than I can express with these words. My gratitude to you is endless.
So this is how I will miss the daily prayers "I SPEAK INTO MY LIFE TODAY". A prayer that comes to me every day of the week, Igbo Gospel messages every Friday and your Facebook write ups on every of your posts.
Daddy was very consistent with these prayers and all . What a man!
Through out my mourning period you stood by me encouraging my Children and I even went out of your way and rendered financial help to me. O daddy....
You promised visiting my Uncle Sir G.A. Azuike anytime you visit Nigeria. what you said to me just this last June Father's Day. You also told me how your home church will confer on you "In Absentia", the first-ever Award of EZIGBO NNA ST JAMES CHURCH, AMAIMO 1 (Father par Excellence). during the father's Day Thanksgiving service in June 2024.
O Death!....
But since 13th July 2024 I never got any more chat , nor call, little did I know that brief illness befell you. (Tears)....
I have been going down memory lane and I am proud that I was given the opportunity to call you Daddy. Yes Daddy, and you called me your daughter.
My friend Onyii Ukonu Toni- Ojiako's Daddy was also my Daddy.
A man who loved his Children and their friends.
A man who worked hard to take care of his family.
A man who brought his Children up in the way of the Lord.
A man who was always willing to lend a helping hand.
A Father and friend to many. Father par excellence.
So many memories to speak about but that would need more than this Facebook page.
I am still in shock , I am still missing the Fatherly advice, encouragement and consolation.
I am still missing all the prayers.....
But who am I to question God.
You fostered my Children and I as your own Children. We all are missing you.
According to Julius Caesar, Daddy you came, you saw and you conquered.
Death really struck, not that your children were not capable. so we can not question God.
Sleep well Daddy.
As I draw this eulogy to a close, I want to express my deepest gratitude for the time we were blessed to share with Sir Sydney Ukonu.
Your presence in our lives brought immeasurable joy , love and Laughter, and for that we are forever grateful.
Gaa ije gi nke oma, onye nwe anyi nara mkpụrụ obi gị.
Till we meet again on the resurrection morning.
Rest in God's bosom.
Adieu Daddy.
Adieu EZIGBO NNA.

TRIBUTE TO SIR SYDNEY UKONU
The news of the demise of Sir Sydney came to us as a rude shock after several unsuccessful phone calls. Sir Sydney was a man of excellent spirit whose knowledge on contemporary issues is usually a delight to many. His Christian faith and decorum stood him out.
Sir Sydney was a gentle and caring man with a strong personality, a man of honor, dignity, integrity, and highly principled always full of smiles, he lived a life of service to humanity and left a trail of pleasant memories.
He was a prolific writer, whose knowledge on issues boarding on Anglican Communion in particular is worthy of note. I reproduce here under, an extract from a write up l received from him before his demise…………...the whole development in our church has become very confusing. Unfortunately, the congregation bears the full brunt of the confusion. Visiting our churches, you will notice that half of the worship time is spent on fundraising, and there is no tangible physical evidence of the amount raised. what is going on in the Anglican church in Nigeria is not only wrong spiritually and invariably unsympathetic to congregants who are regularly milked irrespective of the prevailing hardship in the County. The congregation is suffering in silence, and those who can no longer bear the insensitivity are gradually pulling out of the church………...
Today, we choose not to mourn Sir Sydney, but to honor the memory of a personality whose life was filled with love and treasure that will endure in our hearts.
Binyerem, I urge you and your siblings to take heart and be assured that we share in your grief. It is our prayer that his gentle soul finds solace in the bosom of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Amen

TRIBUTE TO SIR SIDNEY UKONU..” DE SIDI”
( A DISTINGUISHED ANGLICAN CHRISTIAN FATHER OF OWERRI DIOCESE )
We write this tribute with fresh realization of the fact that our journey here is brief.
De Sidi as those of us who related closely with him often called him was a very rare gentleman.
I came close to know him through his beloved late younger brother Venerable Albert..”Ali” as he called him, who was my bosom friend.
He was the first Lay coordinator of the Christian Father’s Fellowship of the Diocese of Owerri while I was the Clerical chaplain. During that period, I worked very closely with him and found him AN EXAMPLE OF A SERVANT LEADER WHO ENJOYED MENTORING those who came close to him. During his years of leadership, Owerri Christian Fathers Fellowship grew speedily due to the selfless leadership style of a practicing believer which he exhibited.
My wife in the company of VEN. Engr Echi Nwogu and VEN Emeka Esonu saw him last in his daughter’s residence at Maryland USA.in 2018..It turned out to be prayer and praise time, for hours.
We wish to express our gratitude to his children who fulfilled scripture that says..” our children will rise and bless us”..( Provs 31:28).”.
THEY TOOK CARE OF THEIR FATHER TILL DEATH “…
YOU WILL NOT LOOSE YOUR REWARD .
ADIEU AN OUTSTANDING CHRISTIAN FATHER AND WORTHY NOBLE KNIGHT OF ST CHRISTOPHER OF THE DIOCESE OF OWERRI, CHURCH OF NIGERIA ANGLICAN COMMUNION.

Daddy Sydney,
It's true you're no more but you sure live in all the hearts of those you touched their lives. I'm one of them.
I knew you had passed the biblical 80 years of strength but you were still waxing strong, that's why your demise came as a rude shock to me when Chigo broke the news to me.
A senior friend yet so humble to reply every mail and text messages via any of the social media handles which has become a very good tool for communication.
You communicated so well most of your thoughts spanning from family to any topic of choice. You were a prolific writer, I look forward to reading your write ups.
Daddy, I met you through your first daughter Lady Chigo Nwanguma while you were in Port Harcourt and you became my friend from that day
You attended my 40th birthday party 9 years ago and you stayed back even after the party was over. You prayed and wished me well. I'll cherish the memories.
Again, when our church, New Covenant Deanery PH hosted a Diocesan Women's Guild conference in 2022, you sent us a token from the US to support the course. I 'll never forget.
You loved your family members, your precious daughters, son , their spouses , your beautiful grandchildren and your friends. You also loved the church and the body of Christ.
You celebrated your children openly to the admiration of all who were your online friends too.
You will be fondly remembered by all you did while you alive.
So sad to say goodbye.

As we will gather to honor the life of a man who touched the hearts of everyone who knew him. My grandpa was the epitome of kindness, always calling his grandkids, including myself, his "angels." It was a simple gesture, but it spoke volumes about the love and warmth he carried in his heart for us all.
He was a man who never seemed to be without a smile. His joy was contagious, and no matter where he went, people gravitated toward him. He raised wonderful children, and his legacy continues through his many grandchildren, who were blessed to have him as a guiding light in their lives. I know I was.
Grandpa had many accomplishments, but the one that stands out most to me is how he lived his faith every day. A man who feared and revered God deeply, he not only talked the talk but walked the walk. Every time I opened WhatsApp – which wasn't too often – there would be a verse of the day from him. Even in the smallest ways, he was there to encourage us, to help us see the beauty in God's word, and to remind us to hold onto faith.
His constant spiritual presence helped draw me closer to God. Through his example, I learned how to live with a grateful heart, to love unconditionally, and to trust in God's plan.
Grandpa, your memory will live on in each of us, your "angels." We will always remember your smile, your wisdom, and your faith. Thank you for everything you did for our family and for everyone who had the privilege to know you. We love you and will carry your light with us forever.
Love, from one of your Angel’s and grandkids, Adanma

Dee Sydney as we fondly call him was such a loved friend of my late father and our family as a whole. He always brightened the day and was always there to support as a good friend he was to my dad. His passing is like a big blow to me and my siblings as he stood in as a dad when my dad passed and was always checking on us. He will always wish me a happy birthday and will constantly send me a happy Mother’s Day message even when I forget to send him a Father’s Day message. Whenever I call him to say hi, I am always excited to hear him say “Hello Uloma how are you?” and he will never hesitate to make sure to ask to know if we are okay.
I feel so lucky to have known him. When my dear father Sir George .M. Iwuchukwu passed on to be with the lord, we were a little confused about certain information, especially about his university days but Dee Sydney made all that information come easy to us and he constantly checked to make sure there was no mistake on the information we are giving out to the public about my dad as they were in the same university the same period and both men continued a very good and close friendship afterward.
I have such great memories of him and his dear beautiful wife Lady Georgy Ukonu who just like her husband was a good friend to our family. I’ll always remember him as a kind and caring person who loved the lord until his passing. Dee had to send me Venerable Ramsey’s Friday gospel message every single Friday and afterward, he connected me to Venerable Ramsey and he sent me this particular message and I quote “Uloma, I now distribute this message to over forty hearers. Praise God! Try to build your audience, so that more people can be reached for Christ”. I am happy you fought the good fight as a gallant soldier of Christ you were.
Dee, your kind personality and great jokes will be missed. You were truly an inspiring person to a lot of people, and we’ll all miss you so much. Greet my parents for me, please tell them we miss them a lot. Keep on resting in the lord until we meet you on the resurrection morning.

Dear Grandpa,
It’s me your Grandson So’so. I want to speak on behalf of myself, of how great of a grandpa you were. You were a very loving, genuine and hardworking man. I saw you as a gentleman and you became a great role model to me, and it inspired me to work hard to get to the Goals I set in life. You loved our family and that is a great Goal I want to achieve in life.
You were always there for us and always made sure everyone is alright. I can’t forget that you knew all of our birthdays and call us on the phone every year during our birthdays. We have visited you on vacations and you always put up a smiling face. I remember you went to vacation with us in 2018 and I watched how gentle you were speaking to all your grandkids when we were disturbing you. You were a great man. You called us your Angels and I So’so, love you so much grandpa, and wish to grow up to be like you, to be able to fulfill life to the fullest. We will miss you as you have passed but I am glad you were old to see all your grandkids. I know you were fulfilled and happy with us, your family before you passed.
Grandpa you have 6 kids and 18 grandkids and it is Amazing how you are there for every single one of us so I am really grateful to you.
I love you so much and I will miss you. We pray you remain happy where you are
Rest in Peace Grandpa.
From your Grandson, So’so.

I write to commiserate with you and the entire Ukonu's family on the demise of your beloved father Hon Sir Sydney Ukonu. It is indeed a painful loss not Just to the family alone but to the entire Anglican Communion and Christendom. Our Consolation is that he lived a life of righteousness and total Commitment to Christ. Be Comforted by this truth that it is NOT HOW LONG WE LIVE BUT HOW WELL WE LIVED IT OUT. HON Sir Ukonu is resting in the Bossom of our lord and this is the most important concern. Having this in mind, we should not mourn like those who do not have hope but rejoice that he is now in the best and most secured place in the Bossom of our lord Jesus Christ ,a place of absolute rest where there is no more sorrow, pains or tears.
May the Grace and Mercy be with you all Amen.
His Worship Chief T.N Agumadu Mrs.

Uncle! It’s still so surreal… You have become such an integral part of our lives, Uncle, especially in these trying times when it’s rare to find someone who truly has your best and most genuine interests at heart. Words fail me as I try to express the depth of our loss. Each time I see something about your funeral, it shatters me all over again. The only comfort we cling to is knowing you’re in a better place now. But oh, Uncle, you should have stayed with us just a little longer. My husband and I were already dreaming of a grand celebration for your 90th birthday, a special surprise to honor you in the way you deserve. We’re heartbroken, Uncle—truly heartbroken. Rest peacefully in the Lord’s embrace until we meet again at the feet of Jesus.
Your Niece,
Nneoma.
