Obituary of Mary Groot Koerkamp

Mary Groot Koerkamp

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Mary Groot Koerkamp on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at the age of 88.

She will be lovingly remembered and forever missed by Arnold, her husband of 63 years, daughter Karen Vangelis of Vancouver, sister Angela Chernowas of Winnipeg and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mary was predeceased by daughter Laurie, mother Antonia (Drykacz), father Stanley (Czarnowas), siblings – Joseph (Czarnowas), Josephine (Lucas Flysak), Thomas (Chernowas), Stanley (Chernowas), sister Gabriel (Czarnowas), Alice (Mike Zwarich) and Lillian (Peter Boyko).

Mary was a quiet and gentle person who looked forward to spending the summer weekends at their trailer in Lee River.  She and Arnold would return to the city with their car loaded with vegetables from their huge garden.  They shared their harvest with family and friends alike.

Mary, along with her daughter Laurie, also enjoyed many crafts - knitting, petty point, cross stitch, embroidery, crocheting to name a few. There was never a pattern that was too difficult.   Each year they entered their crafts at the Red River Exhibition Craft Show and won many ribbons.  Working on puzzles was also a favourite pastime.

A special thank you to all the staff at Fred Douglas Lodge for their care and compassion during Mary’s stay.

A service will be held on Wednesday, October 30th at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street at 1:00 pm followed by an interment at Glen Eden Cemetery, 4477 Main Street.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 4G2
