Obituary of JOSEF ZADRAVEC
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph Zadravec, age 73, of Winnipeg, Canada, on November 22, 2024. A beloved father, fiancé, grandfather, brother, and friend, Joseph's life was a testament to love, devotion, and hard work.
Born on February 7, 1951, in Ljutomer, Slovenia, Joseph was the son of Stefan and Elizabeth Zadravec, who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his wife, Irena Zadravec, and his brother Frank Zadravec. Survived by his son, Zenon Zadravec, and his wife Jamiliah; his fiancée, Maria Bloch; Bonus children Marius, Britany, Ivona, Michael, Justin and his grandchildren Freddie, Aaron, Marcus, Jordan, Justus, and great granddaughter Aaliyah. Joseph's family was the center of his world. He is also survived by his brother Marijan Zadravec, along with cherished extended family members.
Joseph began his education in Slovenia, graduating from high school before pursuing trade school in Germany. His journey led him to Canada in 1970, where he built a remarkable life. It was there that he met Irena, with whom he started a family and raised their son, Zenon. Joseph's dedication to providing a stable and loving home was evident in every aspect of his life. In 1984, he built the family home in Winnipeg, taking care to personally oversee every detail to create a legacy for his loved ones.
A man of great ambition and intellect, Joseph pursued higher education while balancing his roles as a devoted husband and father. He earned a double major in Justice and Law Enforcement and Business Administration from the University of Winnipeg and later obtained a Master's in Public Administration specializing in Immigration Policy from the University of Manitoba.
Joseph’s professional journey was diverse and impactful. He began his career as an auto electrician with Thompson, Manitoba before joining Fort Ignition, where he worked for 25 years. Afterward, he served with Revenue Canada and shared his expertise as an educator, teaching classes at the University of Manitoba. These roles allowed him to inspire others and contribute meaningfully to his community. Later, Joseph transitioned to Corrections Canada, where he served as a parole officer for 23 years. In this capacity, he worked tirelessly to guide individuals toward better paths, demonstrating compassion, fairness, and a steadfast commitment to justice until his retirement.
Beyond his professional achievements, Joseph was a man of many talents and passions. He was fluent in multiple languages, an avid follower of politics and European football, a wine enthusiast, and a skilled craftsman who enjoyed home renovations. His creative spirit also found expression in writing political essays and crime novels.
Above all, Joseph was a devoted family man. He instilled strong morals and values in his son, Zenon, and brought joy to his grandchildren, especially cherishing his time playing with Freddie. In his later years, Joseph found companionship and happiness with his fiancée, Maria, and continued to share his love with those closest to him.
Joseph Zadravec's legacy is one of unwavering love, determination, and kindness. His family and friends will forever remember his warm heart, sharp mind, and generous spirit. He leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories and a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Prayers will be said on Thursday, December 5, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 6, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. at Ukrainian Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha, 115 McGregor Street, Winnipeg with interment to follow in Holy Family Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his honor to Canadian Cancer Society and Cancer Care Manitoba.
