Obituary of SIMON (SAM) DOLHUN
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Simon (Sam) Dolhun, a dedicated professional engineer and a beloved member of our community. Sam passed away peacefully at his home in Winnipeg on November 19, 2024 at age 92.
Simon Dolhun was predeceased by his father Stephen Dolhun and mother Mary (Boruszczak) Dolhun who both passed away in February 1981. Sam will be deeply missed by his sister Margaret Hrushovetz and his two brothers Edward (Bonnie) Dolhun and Wesley (Marcella) Dolhun. Uncle Sam will also be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews, including Mary Margaret (Richard) Powrie, Semeon Bohdan Hrushovetz Jr. and Stephen Michael Hrushovetz, as well as Leslie (Debra) Dolhun, Laurie (Kelly) Gosselin, Leila Dolhun, Lillis (Ryan) Penner, and Lindsay Dolhun and was a beloved father figure to Alex (Natashia) Symchych and Patryk (Ivy) Symchych.
Simon Dolhun was born on March 19, 1932 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and grew up in the family home on Selkirk Avenue. All three Dolhun brothers studied civil engineering at the University of Manitoba. After graduating with his Bachelor of Engineering degree Sam joined the City of Winnipeg where he worked for multiple decades at various roles including Operations Supervisor and District Engineer, ensuring smooth city operations throughout all of Winnipeg's extreme weather swings.
In his younger years, Sam was a formidable athlete. He was an outstanding student athlete at Isaac Newton High School for football and track and field. He was an excellent hockey player and was offered a professional tryout with the NHL but chose to study engineering. Sam was also part of the Winnipeg Light Infantry team that won the Canadian Junior Basketball Championship in 1952; this team was inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame. He also coached the Institute Prosvita Athletic Club (IPAC) men’s basketball teams for many years and played on several Manitoba championship teams with the IPAC and Scottish soccer clubs. Sam’s athletic prowess and leadership were a source of inspiration to many.
Sam found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed good food and good conversation with friends and family and also loved to garden. His green thumb was evident in the flourishing produce he tended with care and passion. Sam loved to travel and made several trips to Europe, the United States and the Caribbean. The holiday seasons held a special place in his heart as he treasured the moments spent with family and attended church services at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral on McGregor Street.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Bruno Hiller for the loyalty, support and caregiving he provided to Sam in his later years, and for his many years of assistance to the extended Dolhun family.
Sam's legacy of dedication, love, generosity, humor and excellence will be forever remembered and deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, kindness, and cherished memories that will continue to inspire us all.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2024 at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sam's memory to a charitable organization of your choice.
